OK, I have a stupid question. Actually, lots of stupid questions, I suppose, but only a few I will pose here for possible answers...
Like many folks, I'm trying to get a new computer, and would like to do so through DS. I'm one of those folks who likes to buy something latest/greatest so I don't hafta think about obsolesence too soon after delivery, and can upgrade for a long time. This last machine was a significant diasappointment - upgradbility wise, at least (although it has run well and problem free for 5 years now).
My last purchase was a DELL XPS system with the single core 3.8 ghz core; I upgraded to a EVGA GT9400 1 gb card last year to try to keep the machine somewhat runnable with the newer games...but this ain't gonna cut it for much longer. My biggest upgrade problem is the limitations of the motherboard. I can't upgrade to a better core with that m/b
That being said - I have been watching information passed here about new motherboards and new cores coming out - specifically the 6 core procs and the new classified mobo. like trying to get a new proc onto my current mobo, I'm afraid I'll be locked into 'last years' technology if I know that 6 and 8 proc cores are coming out and they WON'T fit onto my mobo, or run properly.
Now, I know that the fsb issues my current mobo has are a thing of the past, but does anyone knowledgable in these issues have any insight into this dilemma? Should I wait for the i975 proc? Go with the i965? Or wait for the 6 core? Do we have any insight on the upgradability of procs, mobo wise? I admit, if it's something that simply can't be done, then it's, as I said at the start, a stupid question...but I don't know enuf to know if the smaller pipeline threads necessarily won't work....
<sigh> just don't want to be here again in 5 years because my upgrading options have run out! Thanks in advance for any input!

Well this is a tough time for that kind of a decision, on one hand you got the 975 coming out, on the other hand the 6 core will come out in H1 of 2010 and then H2 of 2010 or H1 of 2011 sandybridge an newer chip will come out.
here is the deal, we are not sure if the gulftown (6 core) will work or not with the current mobos, they might, I posted an article about this in the news section have a look at it
I think I have the same xps you do, all tho I have a bunch of PCs, my last one was the 720 h2c. Keep in mind these custom PCs have higher end parts and higher end parts are touchy, so you run into bad ram sticks or bad GPU etc., but no worries the warranty is there to cover it all. if you are truly going to upgrade every 5 years, then you just need to make up your mind about if you want the 975 or gulftown. Keep in mind the reason we get these PCs is because in a couple of years lets say, you can send in your PC to upgrade mobo and CPU only, this will save us lots of money and bring you up to date. |

Thanks again DST and Harley - the input helps me focus better on where I need to research and what I need to learn. Going with a 720 now is probably fine when I factor in that I *can* send back for u/g of mobo and proc later down the line, since the current programs aren't yet utilizing much of the potential of the current procs.
Now - if I go with a 500mb standard h/d, how difficult is it for me to put an ssd in later as my o/s boot drive? Is it a relatively simple procedure to do this? Do you consider it "Worth it" to go with a smallish ssd now for the os (maybe the 120gb, so I can keep my most popular titles of the week handy) or grin and bear with the 500 until the ssd prices fall a bit more?
As always, thanks so very much for the input. If nothing else, it helps me to undertand what I don't understand, and from there I know what I need to learn!

if you are talking about the dell 720, then you can't send that back for upgrades, unless I misunderstood what you were saying.
upgrading your OS drive is real easy I have a guide for it here you can follow: you can follow my clone guide here go with 500GB now, when vertex 2 comes out check the prices then see if you want to go with a veloci or vertex 2. remember vertex 2 is more then 3 times faster then veloci on SATA 2.0 and more then 4 times faster on SATA 3.0. the vertex 2 is well worth its price, when you consider how much faster everything will get done, backup, scanning, copying etc all 3 times faster minimum

DST, was referring to an i720 proc core on a new DS machine, not Dell 720 series.
One last question - how do I know if I've got SATA 2.0 or 3.0 when I build my machine here at DS? Is that a function of the motherboard? And if so, which options currently avail would give the SATA 3?
And again, thanks to you both!

there is no i720 boss, there is an i7 920
just FYI.
I don't believe that there is a SATA 3.0 mobo for the i7 platform, if there one out at all. |
