When I turn the power on to my PC while it boots I hear a loud beep, is this normal? Is it part of POST? Im asking because occasionally my comp has issues booting up..........I reseated the ram and cable connections ect and it boots better but Im just curious on what is supposed to go down.

Also, a side question.....I have a 1066mhz fsb and my ram is 1066mhz but when I look on CPUZ it says my bus speed is 350.1 and my RAM Freq is 525.0. What was the point in the fast bus speed and RAM if I am not even near those numbers? My config ID was DSO 39779 if you need to reference my components. Im just trying to educate myself here any help would be greatly appreciated.................OH HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

If you have an A1 revision MoBo, it has a post speaker onboard. Alot of cheaper boards don't have this anymore, so you may not be used to hearing anything when a machine boots up. Mine caught me offguard. I haven't had a motherboard with a built in speaker in 15 years.
CPUZ looks like it's reporting non multiplied clocks. Multiply the FSB by 4 and your RAM by 2 to see what the multiplied numbers you are used to seeing really are.
Edit:
Your FSB is running at 1400Mhz QDR
Your RAM is at 1066Mhz
if I have this right.
That sounds a bit high, what does your clock and RAM read when you first boot? It should list them in the post screen. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 31 Oct 2007 at 6:31pm |

The configuration for the number you give doesn't seem to match the system you're talking about. Either that or I'm confused. What motherboard are you using?

The "loud beep" is, of course, the signal for the end of the POST. This should happen every time you boot. When the machine fails to boot, and you don't hear the beep, take a peak inside the case and note the value of the two digit hexidecimal display on the mother board. Those digits tell you what the BIOS was trying to do when things went south. If the number is "FF" the BIOS startup completed and something else failed afterwards.
Tyler is correct about your comonent speeds. It appears that you FSB/CPU is substantially (31%) overclocked. What does CPU-Z report as your "Core Speed" and your "Multiplier"? By the way, what's the CPU here? Edited by Bill the Cat - 01 Nov 2007 at 8:58am |

Bill, The cpu is a quad core q6600 2.4 OC to 3.1. CPUZ says core speed is 2100 and the multiplier is 6.0. Bus speed says 350 but rated 1400. As for the ram it says freq is 525 on the timings heading. I have no clue what this means but it sure is interesting. Thanks for the imput Bill I learn alot from your posts throughout the forums here.

The CPUZ reading is correct. Due to the power savings option your CPU will stay idle most of the time ( 2.4 GHz and 6x multiplier) and ramp up to 3.1 GHZ when it's needed. 525 x 2 = 1050 Mhz for RAM is also correct too.

Commast is correct, at least as far as I know. That's a respectable overclock. You lucked out. |

Thanks fellas. New set of questions...........Vista 64........I have XP, need to upgrade for Crysis, seems as though it runs 60% better with a quad core and Vista64. Apparently I cant upgrade to Vista 64 without a previous version of 64 bit XP? So, do I buy the full Vista64 and try to make a dual boot or what is the best course of action? Is it hard to set up dual boot? Will DSO support this setup? Do I need to get Vista via DSO? I guess in hindsight I shoulda just went with Vista from minute one but Im a rock like that......................looking forward to responses.................thanks again............

You can run Crysis in Dx9 mode in XP if you like. Yes, you have to buy the full version of Vista 64 bit if you don't have XP 64bit. It's not hard to setup dual boot since you already has XP installed first. Vista manager will overwrite XP boot manager and will give you the options to boot to either XP or Vista. Make sure you have 64bit driver for all your devices. No, you don't need to get Vista from DS unless you want to send in your PC so DS can install it for you. DS will probably not going to support this setup since they didn't install Vista 64 on your system.
