I am thinking about investing in a high end rig within the next month and Im curious if the chip/mounting geometry for new wave of intel cpu's will be substantially different than the 1366. If so, is it worth it to configure a LC system for the 1366 and hope the same setup will work for the 2011 socket?

Also, does anyone think the 8 to 10 core SB chips be worth the wait or is the 980x a solid investment right now? At the moment cost is not much of an issue.

if cost is not an issue, get the 980x now, enjoy it, wait for them to get the bugs worked out of SB, should take a year, maybe 2 lol, then upgrade to it.

the LC.. you will have to change the water block, everything else will work for either 1366 and 2011

I didn't even know what a 2011 socket was until reading this, but when I wiki'd it, I found this:

"This socket is expected to be released alongside Sandy Bridge-EX in Q3 2011, and will support 4 memory channels as well as 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes [1]; the socket will measure 58.5mm x 51mm, and is backwards compatible with LGA 1366 cooling solutions [2]."
