Is 6Gb of ram adequate for most situations or is it worth it to upgrade to 12Gb now that prices have come down?

Ya unless you are doing heavy duty 3d editing or virtual servers, 6GB is plenty.

/concur. I went with 12 because I do a lot of work from my home PC.. several virtual systems running concurrently in some cases with enterprise databases running etc.

Isnt that what we used to say about 512MB ? Sooner than later I think 12 will be the norm. If you can afford it I would just get it now. But thats me.
Is it needed? No. Is it wanted? ...Hellya !
