    Posted: 02 Jul 2008 at 4:07pm
Hey everyone.  Just got a new tarantula keyboard and am having problems setting the 10 extra keys to anything.  I got this one as an upgrade after two other Lycosa keyboards had to be shipped back.

When I open the configuration panel, I click on the " L1 " to set the button to something.  I have tried to set it open Warcraft, Conan, and I even tried to get it to just ctrl-v to paste so I could make sure it was working at all.  It will not open any programs, won't paste, and I even tried to set it to just a letter and it won't do anything.

I am thinking there is something I have to be missing here, so I came here in hopes to get help.  Some of you who have this keyboard might know what I am doing wrong since you have had it longer than I have.  Thank you for any help you can give.

Yeah Blaze Really sorry, Harley and I sometimes live on here, but I am afraid I know nothing about the Tarantula. I looked it up on the web and the macro capabilities look prodigious, but I also saw several reviews saying they were a pain to get programmed in some cases.

Me I am a Logitech Fanboy, I have my g15s here.... I love that keyboard, so if you ever need help there, I can jump right in :)

Thanks for the responses guys, I finally got an email from Razer and I explained it to them.  They said they are trying to make it happen on their end.  I know it is a new keyboard, but I have tried every way I know to get it to work.  The macro keys just don't do anything.

My original keyboard didn't have the extra keys so I can't complain too much.  This is the third keyboard I have been sent though, kinda weird I am having so many problems.

They suggested I download the firmware off the site and I tried.  I got this error,

" Sorry, firmware update failed. Disconnect the product and plug it in again. Repeat steps for firmware update. If error persists, please contact technical support. "

I tried to unplug it like it advised and got the same error.  I let them know, but it seems I might have a problem here.  I hope it is something that can be fixed without too much problem.

I have a really simple fix....

1. Return Tarantula - I have always had issues with Razor as a company
2. Take Money and Buy Logitech G15
3. Plug In
4. Install Drivers
5. Play instead of fight with Keyboard.

Done :)

plenty of people use the board fine, dont worry
if youre on your 3rd kb then its obviously not the board itself, it has to be a software or driver conflict. unfortunately that is something that is extremely difficult to troubleshoot from a distance. id guess that installing the new driver like razer said is key. download it in different ways, try running it as an admin, try installing it in safe mode, etc etc

make sure you wipe out any software linked to the KB before installing the new

I was just reading some reviews of the tarantula and I'm seeing that the software for operating the keyboard with Vista is still in its infancy. As of the review dates the vista software was only in the beta stage. Hopefully it gets better.

This isn't the third Tarantula.  I had Lycosa keyboards sent to begin with.  After two weeks or so the covering came off the keys and it looked horrible.  I had to return two different Lycosa keyboards for the same problem.  Digital Storm said they never heard of this, but it happened twice to me.  Since there was obviously something up with the Lycosa, they sent me the Tarantula as a replacement.  Now I am just having different problems with this one.  Doesn't seem like Razer is too good of a company, it is taking them forever to respond to my mails, and this is the third keyboard from their company that had some kind of problem.

If Razer sucks so bad, why does DS use their products?

razer is sick in its speciality, gaming mice and surfaces. as far as thier kb or any "performance" kb i consider all of these a joke. as long as you have a USB kb, you have all a gamer will need. the rest is just the individuals preference for feel. i personally love my elite and am on my second, only because my first was so old and getting worn out after years of tough use and moving all over VA

Razer still hasn't responded.  They sent me an email asking what the problem was after I already explained it.  that was two days ago and they haven't emailed me since.  I don't think they care.

I have pretty much figured out my problem is that I can't download the firmware, and it tells me to contact technical support if I have this problem.  Well, their support sucks.

I really don't want to bother DS with it again =(

This would be the third keyboard I would have to return to them.  I know now that it isn't their fault, it is Razer.  My Lycosa didn't have these buttons, so I am not really missing anything I guess.  Yeah, it sucks, but I don't want to have to bother them again when it isn't their fault.  I will try to deal with Razer and hope for the best.
