Hey everybody,
I have a question, and I hope its not too dumb. My DS computer is at stage 7 and waiting to be shipped, I asked them to delay it until I return to the US in January so all good there. I was wondering this though. I am from Ireland myself and here in the emerald isle there are no regulations/laws against torrenting/downloading YET...if you understand my meaning so the sky's the limit. I was wondering what are the laws/restrictions on torrenting in the United states? Or does it depend state by state? I mean, can you torrent? Or are the stories we get here on this side of the atlantic about people being locked up and fined for downloading a song true? Or is torrenting ok as long as you dont share? Please forgive my ignorance... Regards |

It's definitely illegal, and you can get in trouble for it. I've heard of people getting fined for it, but it's never happened to me, or anyone I know. I know a couple of people who have gotten warnings for doing it, but in all cases they were for pre release screeners for films. I've personally never had a problem with any content new or old, but then I never exceed the bandwidth cap set by my ISP, which also might have something to do with it.

What would a typical bandwidth cap be?
Thats a pity now... So I guess you cant download what you want then? |

Well a few things, torrent is the type of the file the bittorrent protocol uses.
having a torrent file or posting a torrent file is legal. what is not legal here is downloading/uploading a torrent that is copyrighted. there are some ways around it but at the end its not full proof, if you want to upload/download copyrighted files then you are gambling with possibly getting caught. what is a typical bandwidth? depends on your connection and number of sources for the file you are downloading: ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 20 Dec 2010 at 4:23pm |

Yes 4.2 MB/s, you are reading that right.
I have 35mbp upload/download speed, so I can get that much speed if the speed is avaialbe, and for that particular file, there were many sources available, so I was able to get that speed. always remember, with this type of file sharing, your speed depends on number of sources for that file. lets say you are downloading a file that has 2 sources, and each of those sources can give you 1 KB/s download speed. so your speed with those 2 will be 2 KB/s. now lets say the same file has 50 sources and each can give you 1 KB/s download each, now you have 50 KB/s download speed, make sense? I use uttorrent, you can click on my sig where it sayd "Kool Lite Tools" and download it. Just about every tv show/movies are copyrighted. |

Oh yeah I use Utorrent myself aswell and I understand the way it works with the number of sources
But you said you have 35mbp upload/download speed? Christ on a bike!!!! Is that a real speed or are you pulling my leg? 15mbp is fastest you can get here, maybe closer to Dublin you might get 20mbps Thats sick So if I wanna download tv shows/movies in the states, can I or should I just go banannas while im here at home? |

By bandwidth cap I meant the monthly allotted cap your particular ISP allows. Mine for Comcast is 250gb a month, which might not cut it if you watch alot of steaming HD programs. In the states you can get up to 50 mbps, but you're gonna pay through the roof for it. I have 22 mbps and it serves me well.
That 4.2 that DST is great. The most I ever got was 2 ish. How much you pay for that connection? Is it a business plan? |

Dang. The most I ever get is 1.5Mbps, and my line throttles like heck. What service?
In NYC though I know Verizon offers an insane, $100 plan that's 50mbps down and 20mbps up. Pretty insane lol. |
