Got the new system up and running, and I've been trying to monitor temps as I put it through some paces with a few games. Everything looks good, but I do have a few questions for those with experience from the monitoring programs...
RealTemp - I installed v3.60 with no problems, but it's got no GPU monitoring?? I know I must have done something wrong or overlooked something, but that top section for the GPU isn't there when I run it.
Afterburner - Since I couldn't get GPU monitoring to work on RealTemp, I downloaded Afterburner v2.00 to check things out. Unfortunately, just running it once seems to have killed the free overclock that DS did before shipping. After reboot, with AB not loaded or running, the GPU is indicating stock speeds. Not that big a deal since it wouldn't be hard to duplicate, but kind of a bummer right out of the gate.
More troubling is not infrequent spikes in the GPU temp according to Afterburner. Every few minutes the temp graph will show a one hit spike to 160C+ temps, then back to whatever temp it was steadily running previously (usually 50-74C, depending on what I am running). Is this common, and just an error with AB, or is there a potential hardware problem with the card (GTX470)? At best this makes the Max Temp figure useless for system monitoring, and it is really just annoying. Hardware Monitor does not indicate these max temp spikes at all.
I would appreciate any input/advice...

my new realtemp isnt showing gpu either, do you have SLI?
never heard of spikes like that, have you tried stress testing the card(s) and watched your temps then?

Same here, with the GTX 295. It shows up as 106A5.

No SLI, just a single GTX470.
Crap, it looks like something is definitely wrong, then. I was really hoping the random spikes were a common thing and just a software problem.
I just left the system on and idling during dinner after resetting the min/max. When I came back to check, the GPU temp was steady at 38C, but showed a min of 0C and a max of 191C, show it spiked both directions while sitting doing nothing. The fan speed also regularly spikes from a steady state 50% to one hit at 100% then back to 50%. There is never any change in the sound of the fan when it does this, and you can definitely tell by sound when a 470 fan is really at 100%.
Something is hosed, and I guess I have to hope it is just the video card and not the mb. Hardware Monitor also shows weird spikes under the heading - Analog Device ADT7475->Temperatures->Remote 1, Local, and Remote 2. Those three temps are normally in the 30-40C range, but will randomly show a max value in the 180-200+C range and then show a max value of (-2147483648)C. Strangely, Hardware Monitor never shows the spiked max temps for the GPU, only Afterburner shows that.
This really sucks to find on a week-old system. I would've thought this is the kind of thing that should have been caught in the days of Stage 5 stress-testing...

have you done all of the standard reseating inside the case? inconsistant readings like that could definitely come from a less than perfect connection, especially if its showing in different parts of the system.

Yeah, I did that yesterday, and it didn't seem to have any effect.
