Only took a couple of hours for me to insert a Windows 7 CD and format my brand new Bolt.
Windows 8 is just too F-ING annoying on so many levels. |

Good to do it now instead of after loading all your goodies.
Enjoy. |

I had started to do that and was just getting frustrated at how many extra steps it takes to do things that were simple in Win 7 |

That will teach me.
Win7 was rock solid. Never should have taken the chance. Live and Learn. I'm cranky now. But eventually everything will be perfect.

Ive got one more small issue but that should be taken care of by the end of the week.
Stupid DVD player died. I ended up plugging in a spare laptop drive after talking to tech support to finish the driver installs. In hind site I am glad that failed now, because I rarely if ever use a DVD/CD as everything is a digital download. A little bit of an annoying start, Mostly due to Windoze8 but the Pc is at home, Im downloading my 2 fav games and tomorrow night will be awesome. My crazy setup of using my 27" iMac as an external monitor with a display port to Mini Display port worked flawlessly. So looking at everything from a positive point of view (fYI margaritas eliminate stress very effectively) Having to do all this loading/reloading is really showing how insanely fast the Bolt is. Ill put together a full review in a new thread in a couple of days. Also DS customer service is incredible. I was cranky when i called and they handled my whininess with perfection Gerardo and Mike, thanks for putting up with me. |

I'm using Windows 7 and Windows 8 on two different computers. I still prefer Windows 7. Part of that is due to familiarity and the other part is that I do not have a touch screen. However, Windows 8 has been extremely stable and it is not bad once you get used to it. That being said, I haven't used Windows 8 for any gaming, only work related programs (web development, SQL, etc).

I ended up getting CoreTemp and RealTemps so I have temp monitoring software.
Does anyone think I will need LinX or hwcontrol? I had both on the Win8 Image. Since the system was already thoroughly tested and I am not going to mess with the Bios OC settings, I'm thinking I don't need them unless something starts to look like a hardware issue. As far as performance goes, I've checked out numerous websites and it seems to really depend on the game for what OS works better. Most of the results end up being within 1-3 FPS for first person shooters, so there does not seem to be a huge advantage of one to the other. My setup is pretty cool. The instant I power on the Bolt, the iMac switches over to display it on the screen. I can then cycle back and forth using Command - F2 By avoiding all web surfing and email on the Bolt, I should be able to keep it clean. |

Get HWMonitor or EVGA Precision to check the graphic temps.

IMHO to be fair you have to use an OS for a month minimum then you get a better idea of what you think of it, otherwise we are all used to one thing and if something is different from it then it will not sit well with us.
HWMonitor or EVGA Precision are great but afterburner is the best IMHO between precision and afterburner. |

Patiently waiting for my new Bolt with Windows 8. My order was placed after having used Windows 8 on one of my laptops. My work has me on dozens of different computers each week. Also, run lots of servers from Windows 2000, 2003, and 2008 to CentOS Linux. Maybe running the recent spins of Fedora prepared me better for Windows 8, but also have found the abilities in Windows 8 to run Hyper-V and spin up all kinds of things with that and Azure led to ordering a Bolt with an i7 and plenty of memory. Did I really say "waiting patiently"? Oh, and it will game just fine from Windows 8 - already checked that out too.

From an IT and user point of view, I just think they half assed it. For gaming it has been proven that it is not faster. It completely depends on the game. A lot of games still run faster in Windows 7. So the faster is not black and white.
I can reference numerous website sites that did direct comparisons. In alot of cases, Windows 7 has the Frame Per Second edge. Here is a funny video that while it goes a little extreme This guy pretty much highlights everything I hate about Windows 8. Windows 8: The Animated Evaluation IMHO Metro on a non tablet sucks. The guy in the video makes very valid points. You have to view this video from a normal users perspective. Yes it is over sensationalized, but, from that point of view, vs a Power User, this guys video will hit home to a lot of people who are not computer savy. If you learn the keyboard shortcuts, you can get around alot of the stuff, but it is not optimized at all for a mouse. The Charms bar is a perfect example. Only activates in the corner vs the side. The other thing that is highly annoying is how MS split settings. a perfect example is your User account. In Windows 7 you controlled that 100% in the Control Panel. Now in Windows 8, you control 80% of the settings in the old Windows 7 style Control panel, but then have to change your account Picture using Metro. that is just dumb. Another example is IE launched from the desktop vs Metro. Etc etc etc etc. I can go on and on. These dumb little things add up to taking more time to do the same task. WTF didn't they move all of the control panel into the new settings? Now people have to go to 2 separate locations? Why have the old Windows 7 Control panel at all? Windows 8.1 proves that even Microsoft realizes they goofed. Microsoft is re-adding the normal start menu. Also, it seems no one who knows what they are doing, leaves it alone and tweaks the crap out of it, to remove the short comings of the interface. Most immediately add a start menu or relocate the Desktop tile to the upper left so they can hold the enter key on startup and immediately bypass Metro. I think it was a great idea for a phone. On a PC, IMHO, I consider Metro a total fail. Microsoft doesn't realize how many people they have driven to the Mac as a result of this. Even the tablets are failing miserably. It's been a nightmare for M.S. I have nothing bad to say about Windows 7. Combined with Server 2008 R2 in an enterprise setup it is down right awesome and very secure. Windows 8 is definitely love or hate. I'm in the hate category. I will test 8.1 because I am objective and need to know for my job, but I will not run 8. |
