Topic: The Dreaded Future Proof Question Posted: 09 Aug 2012 at 10:57am |
I don't know why I'm getting all bent out of shape about this, maybe it has something to do with my OCD personality. I'm trying to hypothetically think out whether an intel socket type LGA 1155 is more or less future proof than an LGA 2011.
I know that LGA 2011 is the most recent release and suited for sandy bridge-e processors. But with the new ivy bridge it seems like since everything is getting smaller....22nm may be sticking around regardless of increases in speed. Does that make any sense? Essentiallly considering the motherboard a slave to the cpu. We may never see another 32nm cpu. Seeing as how efficiency and speed are king in that industry...does this make the 2011 boards kind of like the HD DVD...quickly taken over by the Blu-ray.. Any ideas? |

so along the same line of thinking....
just realized with the LGA 2011 socket type you also get 8 pci-e lanes and not 4. hmm...so the next generation board would be an LGA 1155 with 8 pci-e lanes? |

You will be more future proof with lga 2011 socket as ivy bridge e will use the same socket. Haswell will use an entirely new socket so 1155 is less future proof. I would get the lga2011 socket with the 3820 so then you can upgrade to ivy bridge e in a few months when it comes out

The 2011 socket is actually a 40 Pci lane board and the 1155 socket is 16 lanes. The 1155 can be upped to 32 lanes I believe if you went with a Extreme mobo or the new Z77 Premium I think its called.
If you will never use more than 2 graphic cards then it makes no difference. The 2011 allows 3 cards at x16x8x8. the 1155 allows x8x8. With the Z77 mobo and Ivy Bridge cpu ( i7-3770k, i5-3570k), it gives you Pci e 3.0 for future cards that might saturate a x8 slot, effectively giving you a x8 pci3.0 that would be a x16 with pci2.0 with sandy bridge chips. 2011 is more future proof but you might never use it. Unless you're getting into tri-sli or more card setups then the 1155 boards are all you need. Hope this helps. tju76 posted while I was writing. Edited by bprat22 - 09 Aug 2012 at 11:27am |

Ok sounds like LGA 2011 boards let you plug more things into them and are for the enthusiast series cards. ivy bridge will have their own line of enthusiast cpus i could upgrade too.
in the meantime i can get the i7-3930k. |

Yep, that's pretty much it. Ivy Bridge e will replace the 3930k at some point if all goes well.

Yeah ivy bridge e will be released 2013 1st half if you are planning on getting ivy bridge e I would just go with the 3820 now and save your money for ivy bridge e if you need the 6 core then get it but it will not help in gaming at all

Hey guys. Having never built my own computer before, when Haswell comes out, and I want to upgrade, can I just switch out the mobo and the CPU, and call it a day, or is there anything else that I would need to do to upgrade?

Yeah that would work I mean its hard to say what future technology will become available, maybe there will be a faster sata tech so you would want to update your sata devices like ssd etc. It will be a wait for haswell so I wouldn't worry about it, intels roadmap seems to always be off just look at the wait with ivy bridge and keplar the newer smaller die sizes seems to be more complex to manufacture than past tech.

Okay. Thanks. I just wasn't sure if there was something else that I would not realize needed to be swapped out.

Is DS building any systems with the LGA 1155 MOBO P8Z77-V PREMIUM? I know its not listed anywhere but I would like that in my build. Sorry if this off topic.

Hi SaberOne,
If it isn't listed I don't think DS stocks it. Although they will order any component they don't carry for you. Also you could order it and send it to them for your build. Best to call them and find out which way would be the best cost and warranty wise.

Thanks Asangard, I've been lurking on the side lines for more than a year and just recently decided to plan out a build.

SaberOne, that MOBO's a decent choice, but I'd go with the Sabertooth if I were you

Well, I did call DS and they will not accept any customer provided parts, or at least the case. It goes back unopened so I'll be placing my order in the next day or so. I decided on the 79 Sabertooth along with a few other enhancements. Very draining process but it helped pass the time while I was in the hospital.
