Ok folks, I am really running on my old system's last legs, so it's time to really get that upgrade. Here is what I am looking at. My biggest concern with this ninja killer is that it is SILENT and DEADLY!!! Right now I am totally split on the video card cooling. Some say the noise on the 295s are relatively quiet, and other boards say they are as high as 60 db, which is really loud. Can anyone who has the cards air cooled and are really noise sensative make comment on how loud they are? Also, let me know any other suggestions you can make to keep this system extra quiet and extra fast. Thanks in advance! Ticket Number: 268923

Well first let me say overkill.
second let me say that if you don't know how to change the heatsink on the GPU, then be prepared to be without your PC for a few weeks at a time, cause if anything goes wrong with the LC on GPU you have to send it back and that in itself is 2 weeks worth of shipping. Most of your noise will come from the GPU fan, the noise of the fan depend on the temp of the fan, in other words when the PC is idle your fans are running on low and noise is low, when you are gaming the GPU gets hot and the fan will run at 100% and that is loud, well depends who you ask, I don't think they are but some people think they are loud, 60 dpa is suppose to be like normal talking voice 3 feet away, to me that is not loud, but I have a feeling to you that is way too loud, seeing you are so big on being silent. your PSU will put out some noise also performance does not come silent I would get something like this instead and wait for the super fast SSDs that are going to be out later this year and and upgrade to one of those for the OS drive. here you go Ticket# 268956 --- Price: $4599 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $4299 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Digital Storm 950Si Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 Classified 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 3GB DDR3 1333MHz Mushkin (Highly Recommended) (Digital Storm Certified) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: Blu-Ray Writer/Reader (Burn Blu-Ray discs and play them) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Quad (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 1.792GB) (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 3: High-Performance Liquid Chilled FrostBite System For CPU & Two GTX 295 Video Cards Liquid Color:UV Blue: Medium Glowing Non-conductive Fluid (Requires H20: Stage 3 & UV Lighting) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (UV) (Creates Glowing Effect For H20: Stage 3 UV Fluid) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty get a 5 year warranty instead. good to see you back btw you know in a month the i7 975 is coming out right? Maybe, but I like my systems to last a bit more than just 2 years.
I am aware of that, but I rather deal with having to ship it rather than constantly having a lot of noise.
Actually, it was 60 db (decibels), which is comparitively about as loud as a vacuum cleaner. 20 db is barely audible, close to ambiant room noise. 35 db is about the sound of a refrigerator, and I am hoping to get this system to around 30 db worst case.
Asside from which, if my the PC is as loud as normal conversation 3 feet away, it's really annoying and too loud for me.
No argument there, it's a delicate balancing act.
When are these supposed to be out? Last I heard, the OCZ Vertex was the top of the line coming out, and when raided they have data transfers around 450 - 500 Mps. That's 4 times faster than my currenty 160 MB Velociraptor RAID 0. I couldn't picture then coming out with anything faster, we are talking memory drives, there is a speed limit.

OK overkill has nothing to do with lasting for more then 2 years, I have yet to recommend a system to anybody that would last only 2 years, not counting the GPU.
I told you about not being without your system as a warning, talk to a couple of people that have gone thru it and you may not be so OK with not having your PC 3 month at a time, not saying it will happen, just warning you that it is a possibility, one that GPUs without LC don't have. every place I know says 50 dBA is like an office or a classroom, 60 dBA normal conversation (3 feet away, 40 dBA as a living room and 30 dBA as a bedroom at night. we are all waiting for the vertex 2, which is a single drive that has 480MB/s write and read around 550MB/s and thats on SATA 2, on SATA 3 its even faster. if you like to spend so much money, why don't you go get one of those SSD PCI drives that have like crazy speeds like 800MB/s read and write, they cost over a grand tho. anyways the things I pointed out are just for your info, I'm not trying to argue or anything just trying to pass on the info. at the end you got to get what you like, I just want to make sure you know make your final decision knowing all the info possible and if at the end you still want to go with that system, then more power to you, get what you like, I'm just trying to help by providing info Edited by DST4ME - 10 Apr 2009 at 8:33pm |

Now, I understand that sometimes, excessive noise may be a distraction. But typically, if a sound maintains a certain level, you eventually tune it out. Kinda like if you go to a farm and at first, you are stunned by the "natural" aroma from all the animals. As time goes on, you accept it as normal background smell and don't even notice it until it drastically changes. Same with sound.
If noise is still bothering you, perhaps you should try headsets. Just saying.
Yes, I wear a headset for everything I do on the computer. I hear everything a lot better.

It's called going deaf, and it's not something I care to do. Even mild white noice can do damage with prolonged exposure.

Any rumors about SATA 3? I tried to see if I could find a release date for it, and couldn't find much. It sounds worth waiting for, but not if it's past summer. There is always something coming out, and I just am running out of time.
BTW - Your recommendations are always appreciated. Sorry if I come off as obnoxious, it's just my nature :)

No, it's not. Trust me, I have a 50% hearing loss.
As you are driving down the road, are you constantly focusing on the noise of your engine? Or do you accept it as standard background noise so long as it doesn't do an unexpected change.
That is what I meant by a sound maintaining a certain level. When you accelerate, you consciously notice the pitch change, but if you are just cruising along, you don't notice it, but the sound is still there and if you focus on it, you hear it.
By tuning it out, I didn't mean to imply that you could never hear that sound again.
