Hey gents, I've got my monster PC from DS up and running and it is flawless so far.  Game performance is literally stunning.  I threw some real hogs at it, and it never blinked, running Far Cry 2, Mirror's Edge (which I really dig), BIA Hell's Highway and Left4Dead maxed out.  iRacing used to give me 15-25 FPS in races with everything turned way down; now I get 255 FPS with everything maxed!

I'm trying to gather advice on good practices when it comes to looking after the beast.  Specifically:

-  Is there a utility (preloaded by DS or not) that can monitor the system for excessive heat or stress?  What are the benchmarks?  How can I be sure that I'm not approaching DEFCON 5?

-  What is the best way to clean an LCD monitor (this is my first)?

-  Should an LCD be switched off or sent to sleep when not in use?

-  Do you use Vista defragger or something else and how often?

-  Can anyone recommended dust limitation devices for an office that has to be naturally ventilated without a/c?

Here are the following precautions I have taken already but all other suggestions are welcome:

Sign on office door:

No cats.
No open containers of liquid.
No children except under full adult supervision.

The Vista Sleep mode has had its problems not resuming.  I personally just go into Power Management and set to turn off display in 30 minutes (20-30... whatever works for you).  And you don't have to use trial versions of a defrag program.  "Smart Defrag" (Advanced System Care) is a good freeware program or, Auslogics Disk Defrag is another free defrag program.

Call me crazy, but isn't it bad for your monitor to always stay on?

Defcon 5 is world peace.
Defcon 1 is nuclear war.

Just thought id clean that up =P common mistake.

PS. I have to turn my LCD off everynight, because when i shut down the computer, a screen pops up saying the monitor isnt connected, so instead of burning out the screen i just shut it down for the night.

HWMonitor is a good program, but it requires your supervision :(

Is there a software that will run in the background, and alarms you when there is a heating problem??

Maybe like a windows sidebar gadget??

Let me add another question:

What shall we use to uninstall programs?? and clean the registry??

I always install/uninstall programs, I know that this is bad because it leaves folders/files and registry entries.  Sometime programs don't even uninstall correctly.

Thank you for the clarification.  After seeing "Wargames" about 12 times you'd think I'd know better.

There are lots of great sidebar gadgets you can run to monitor everything. You can take a look at my desktop in the desktop thread and see if you like it. Let me know if you do and I'll post some links to the sidebar gadgets I use along with some other nifty tools.

Don't forget to talk to it and speak softly around it.  You could hurt its feelings.
