Frankly, I don't know. The little I've read suggests there isn't much difference. The X48 might be DDR3 RAM only.

Official support for 1600MHz FSB. This means the difference is that the manufacturer acknowledges and gaurantees the FSB speeds most high end boards were already working at (and beyond).

"Official" is the key word there. I believe the articles said there wasn't much difference because the X38 boards they tested were reaching FSB speeds over 1600 MHz.
