Hi,
My current DS HAF 922 Rig ( which is still awesome) has an original configuration which includes the following: Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core)OK'd to 3.94Ghz Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) I was wondering which chip set would make the most sense to upgrade to. I know I can not go to the latest die's because my ASUS Mobo does not support them. I strictly use this rig for gaming. Thanks..

Hi Becks.... Save your money, in my opinion. The i7-920 oc'd is still a great gaming chip. The newer Ivy Bridges like i5-3570, i7-3770k won't give you much in gaming. Maybe other apps like editing, etc. Plus, your mobo is a LGA 1366 socket which restricts you to 960/970/990 which might not even be available.
The newer Sandy bridge and even newer Ivy Bridge require a mobo with LGA 1155 socket. The socket is the pin count. What's your video card? That might be the way to go with the new Kepler cards like the gtx 670. Good Luck. If you still have a 5870?, here;s a comparison with 670. Edited by bprat22 - 08 Jan 2013 at 9:04am |

Hi bprat22,
You are absolutely right. Thank you. I went over to ASUS to see what cpu's could be used with my mobo, and I saw that I can't as well. Since getting my DS rig back in 3/2010 I hace upgraded the GPU to a GTX 680 2G, and the 500Gig HD to an Intel 520 SSD. I have also increased the memory to 12Gig. I am still very, very Happy with my DS Rig, and couldn't be more pleased with the purchase, and the help in these forums. Thanks Again bprat22..it is folks like yourself that make this place Great..! Always a pleasure.
With your upgrades you gotta be smoking pretty much any game, if on a single monitor. Nice rig.

Far be it from me to correct the mighty bprat22 but I believe the later Sandy Bridge Processors (i.e. 3930, 3960X etc.) use the LGA 2011 platform.

Nope.
Sandy Bridge was i7-2600k and i5-2500k with LGA 1155 for example. The Sandy Bridge E , for Extreme, is the X79 bunch with LGA 2011, like 3820 and 3930k . When I said the newer Sandy Bridge I meant newer than his older processor, not the newest Sandy Bridge. It is confusing. My head hurts.
