Case $60.00  Case with 550W PSU
Processor $300.00  Q9450 Processor
Cooling $150.00  Thermaltake Liquid Colling for CPU
MoBo $300.00  EVGA 790i Motherboard
RAM $300.00  4GB DDR3 RAM
GPU $600.00  Nvidia GTX 280 Video Card
HDD $600.00  x2 300GB Velociraptor 10000RPM   HDD
OS $120.00  Windows XP Professional
Optical $30.00  Optical CD/DVD Writer
Mouse $65.00  Lachesis Gaming Mouse
Keyboard $40.00  Timberwolf FPS keyboard
Monitor $250.00  Samsung 19" LCD 1280 x 1024
$2,815.00  Total

Now, this is based on some quick research - Didn't necessarily look for the best prices anywhere, and this does not take shipping into account. I have never built before, I wouldn't know how to install liquid cooling, but I could give it a try. I plan to buy in the spring. Now I ask - it it worth saving a grand to build, or as a first-timer am I taking a greater risk in f***ing it up?

I tried getting roughly these specs in the DSO configuration page, and it was running up in the neighborhood of $3600 without a monitor.

Can anyone guestimate whether or not by March '09, I might be able to get this PC from DSO under $3000? (without monitor would be fine too, for that price point)

Yeah dont think I'd be doing that build with just 550W PSU either, don't skimp your case selection over a few bucks.  Secondly I wouldn't want to risk 3k on building it myself which like you a newbie would take upwards of several hours to complete.  Ask yourself is 10-12 hours of your time to do the job not warranted worth the 1k vs. a professional skilled technician that warrants their work for 3 years and provides instantaneous customer service?  Who ya gonna call when you fire up your comp and it doesn't work a computer tech at $100/hr, and now your savings isn't so big.

I weighed the parts and having a friend put mine together and the difference between cost of parts and factoring in a 20% profit margin for DSO put it right in line with DSO's price.  To me the professionalism exhibited by this company is unmatched by anyone out there and well worth the money, I don't even own my system yet but I tell everyone I game with this company is who will be building my computers for years to come not only because of this community but because of their superior customer service and attitude.

Figure in tax and shipping on the parts too, it was about a 600 dollar margin for me and Ive built several rigs in the past, for 600 hundred I get a warranty and dont have the hassel.

I could just as easily have built my own and chose not to. As others have mentioned, you get an expertly assembled computer with a 3 year warranty, and *lifetime* technical support. Also, IMO, save yourself some $$$ and go with DDR2. You're not going to be able to overclock that CPU much past 3.6GHz anyway given the Q9450's multiplier, so you're not going to need anything close to DDR3 speeds.

lol Harley, I was talking about buying parts from like new egg, and its not free in the US from them, that was kinda my point. You pay tax and shipping on parts depending on your state vs no Tax/shipping from DS depending on state.

To Hijack this thread back to the question :)

I agree with Sky, March '09 come back and look, many of the parts you selected are close to or past end of life.

The GTX280 will be around likely as a mid range or budget card, the 9450 will be as well, maybe under a new budget number, but the processor is sure to exist, it is solid performer that runs cool.

The rest is a crap shoot as to wether it will be any good or even sold anymore by March 09.... I mean that is 8 months out... an eternity in computer hardware terms.

In 09, build what you feel works for you within your then budget and we will all be happy to pick apart your build :)

Hi gang......I'm new to the DS forum and would like to thank Alex and harleyman for all the help getting established. On to the subject.....I thought about building......bout 5 seconds.... I researched long and hard for a good honest builder and DS won my business hands down. 3 year warranty, overclock, free shipping and excellent support.....Smile   Thanks
