I've been respec'ing a computer every other day from DS and I am hesitant. With USB 3.0 motherboards just hitting the market and ownership for the next X ( 10? ) years... it makes sense for me to wait for DS to offer a motherboard with USB 3.0 capabilities.
Directx11 video cards will be delayed until the end of the first quarter of 2010. I am not sure if I can justify jumping the gun and ordering a system today. After all, its a lot of money to throw down. Thoughts? |

They aren't bad thoughts but three prevailing logics come to mind:
1. If you wait for the next great thing, you'll wait your whole life. 2. Memory prices are going up again, this may mean nothing.. or it could get ridiculous. 3. DS's warranty is open architecture, which means you can upgrade and not void the warranty on the original parts of the system (in a nutshell). I still see your point though. I'm curious at what good superfast USB ports will be though, other than loading your phone/ipod REALLY fast. |

Could you not perhaps get some kind of add-on controller card for that later on? I know they have them for esata.
Or does that not work well? |

I bought my system a year ago and have been very happy that I bought it when I did. Having a PC that boots up quick and plays games great as well as other stuff needing done has been wonderful.
I was moving up from a Pentium 4 so I was really needing to get a system then and couldn't afford to wait for what might be coming out over the coming months.

I am also anxiously awaiting USB 3.0 and Sata 6bs motherboards. But I also am going to wait for the Next southbridge to run them, and not a band aid, add on like the available mobo's have.. Early adopters always have some kinks, but I would at least wait for a "real" USB 3.0 and SATA 6bs mobo. Just my opinion. And like others have said, if you are waiting for the next best thing in electronics, you will never own anything.Edited by justin.kerr - 29 Dec 2009 at 6:58pm |

Wow thanks for all the responses.
Yea its an alternative I suppose. I've seen cards for 45$ that offer two port connections.
I'd be moving from an E8400, 4gb DDR1200, 8800gtx, Gigabyte ex38 mobo to some crazy machine from DS. I've had this machine for a little less than 2 years and runs very well for gaming and video editing. I am pretty pleased with my machine and I don't absolutely need a new rig but its kinda addicting I suppose ( cranking up all the settings, playing with no lag, multitasking with multiple adobe programs running ). I am investing in DS to build me a computer that will jump well ahead of the curve for the next few years ( and even when I am not ahead of the curve I wouldn't be far behind ). I figured since usb3.0 and directx11 cards are coming out, I'll just hang tight for 3 lousy months =D |

I'm with Justin. I've got a two+ year old machine that still works well for me cause I think gaming at 1280x1024 is hires. However, my motherboard has PCIe 1.0 slots. I believe that bus would start to throttle the GPU if I upgraded the video card again. When it comes time to upgrade this machine, I'm going to have to do a motherboard transplant on it; not looking forward to this.
IMHO, USB 3.0 is going to be a big deal... eventually; not nearly as big a deal as the switch from 1.0 to 2.0, but it's still going to be pretty noticeable.

I wouldn't wait for usb 3.0. It's going to be a little while still before it is mainstream. One of the benefits of having a custom computer is the upgradability.
