A friend of mine recently told me that he was interested in getting a new gaming rig.  What do you think the first thing I did was?  Oh, your all too smart for me.  I referred him to DSO.  Then a funny thing happened.  His computer died.  I must have laughed for an hour when he told me that he was typing in the http address for DSO when it happened.  So now he is in need of a new rig.

Oh, and one more thing.

His dad is crazy rich.  Like, bought his son an Aston Martin DB9 for his 18th birthday crazy rich.

SO!  Here are the facts:

1.) My friends dad is gonna buy him the rig soon.
2.) It might be straight from DS, or he might get some parts from Newegg and put it together himself.  (Don't worry, he has built his own computer before, so he knows how to do it).
3.)  He asked me to come up with what I thought was the BEST POSSIBLE build for a gaming rig that DSO could provide. (He has an idea of what he wants, but he wants to hear other peoples opinions before he makes a decision.)

Ok.  Since I'm not as good at making computer builds as most everyone else is around here, I thought that it would be wise to ask a master.

Cue DST4ME.

My friend wants the best of everything.  Compatability, power, looks, speed, ect.
He wants something that will be able to play the very latest games today and 5 years from now.  He wants somthing that will be easy to upgrade.

His words, "Money is no option.  Go crazy."

Have at it DST4ME.

Oh and I want other peoples opinions to!  lol I just really want to see what DST4ME thinks.

"Go crazy." Confused

Would 12 SSD's fit in one case?  I have no idea...that's crazy if they can! I don't think that some of the things that DS sells are "the best" simply because they cost more.  I need the best of the best in this computer!  if the ABSOLUTE BEST GPU set up was 1 ATI card (lol not likely) that cost $50, then rather then getting a Tri-SLI 285 2GB set up, go with the cheaper one.  (lol once again, that will NEVER happen...1 $50 ATI card beating 3 $400 nVidia cards...yeah right.)  He needs the best parts PERFORMANCE-WISE, not simply cost wise.

lol just for kicks, i actually chose the most expensive parts on the config page.
look what the total is:

I do not think the point is to simply pick out the most expensive parts DSO offers. Just because he has a high budget does not mean we should suggest waist-full parts that he will never notice. Even for a super high budget the point remains the same. Suggest the best build possable for the cash. It wouldn't matter to me if you had a $100,000 budget, I would not suggest components that offer no real performance increase just because someone has the money for it.

I think some more consideration for other peoples money should still apply.

Now, what exactly is he going to be running as far as monitors go?

Also we cant exactly suggest something in the "best looks" department because we all have our personal preference. That will have to be up to him.

However with a high budget it would be a option for him to consider asking DSO to special order the case of his dreams lol.

Well let me tell you right off the bat that I don't do crazy builds that cost an arm and leg for $10,000, just so a $4500 computer can match or beat its performance.

now having said that, I need to know what games he likes to play and what resolution is he going to be playing on. I also need to know that if gaming is 60% use of this PC then what is the other 40% usage? I mean does he do any graphic 3D designs or does he just basically game with some normal CD/DVD burning and video encoding and some light photoshop?

few points, nobody can config a PC that he can play games with 5 years from now, I have no idea how far technology is going to go in 5 years, what the directx is going to be or anything like that.

I think I just found a candidate for the future 2 x 285 in one card called the GTX 295 but this one is made of 2 x 285 and not 2 x 260+ like the old one, but it will be a PCB sandwich tho, but ya it will make the regular 295 cry like a little baby

Money is no object...the best DSO has to offer...just want to see what (we) can come up with...  This question sounds (awful) familiar...not to say this "friend" doesn't exist.

My suggestion...have dad buy DSO...then junior won't have to WORRY about choices, upgradability...or protection against obsolescense...

Ok, who's next...

He will be gaming at 2560x1600.  He likes petty much everything gaming wise.  First Person Shooters, RTS, RPG...I guess mostly first-person shooters.  Crysis, Far Cry 2, Half-Life Series, Mirror's Edge, COD, ect.

As for the other question:  No, he wants a strictly gaming PC.  He never got into  photo editing or  graphic design.  95% Gaming.  5% like Word, Excel lol.

Zardoz, I don't know if anyone has asked this question before.  I'm new to the forums. So I'm sorry if it has been asked before, but what can I say?  I want to know what these guys think, thats all.

No need to be sorry...my response was directed more @ DST4ME (and others) than you on my "haven't we just seen something like this" statement.  But, you're right...I purposely left it vague...didn't really think it was you (again) but, then...  Anyhow....wasn't too long ago that someone wanting the best-of-the-best...tricked out the configuration page to the tune of $18K +.  Funny, thing too...they wanted "Gloss black-on-black" paint also.

I'm sure your friend is a really nice guy and all...and aside from it might be fun to spend his money...why are you doing all the leg work for him??  I know you said his machine died...but, hey, it's hard to believe he doesn't have access to another computer--just curious?  For most of us...picking/ordering/getting a computer is about as personal as choosing a girlfriend--not something you delegate.  Evil%20Smile

On second thought...maybe I'm just jealous of your friend...my father's checkbook only covered necessities

Yeah, I know its kinda weird.  I know that he has a laptop that he uses when he's not gaming.  But I think he said that his internet was down or something.  I don't know.  He's very peculiar about his computers.  Plus I think that he was a little embarrassed that his rig broke.  I'm just doing what he asked me to do. I know that it's kind of awkward...

I really think people should stop suggesting things like custom paint. Such personal preference choices should be left to the buyer. If the buyer is dieing to have a blue case and thinks its worth $300 to get one then it is his choice.

I believe as I stated before the goal here is the same. This is NOT about what you would buy if you won the lotery..It is still about helping a person buy the best computer for his needs. A red and white case will not give you 5fps over a black one lol.

Here ya go, I believe any one of these or any variation of these will be exactly what he's looking for.

These are just the basic components if he wants loads of extras then that is up to him, I will not suggest them simply because of a high budget.

However if he wanted more then a good place to start would be

1.Air flow upgrade
2. Sound card.
3.RAM
4.more hard dive space

now that build above is not complete.

first you see it has no HDD1 for OS, that is because you are going to get 2 x Intel X25-E Extreme SSDSA2SH064G1C5 2.5" 64GB SATA II SLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) and send them to DS to raid 0 for you and the rest of the ssds can kiss your arse.

as for liquid cooling, first make sure they use the quick-release valves for your GPUs so upgrading or replacing is very easy.

now once you got all that in line, you need to ask for the swiftech Swiftech GTZ waterblock, you also ask them to give you 2 x   Black Ice GTX240, one for your CPU loop and one for your GPU loop.

now you are probably looking at a big price tag, but you said price is no option.

I can think of many other variations of this, perhaps a PCI SSD drive for HDD1 instead of an Intel (if you want to spend $2000 on it) but in reality other machines will not beat this machine, best they can do is keep up with it.

of course being for gaming you might just forget the Intel SSDs and just raid 2 x 120GB OCZ vertex.

also if he is on some kick to waste money he can get 3 x 285 but the difference is more noticed in the price you paid then it is in game experience.

BTW I painted the case to look just like the image that is show on the config page.

I find it rather interesting that DST Mr. best bang for you're buck selected a custom black paint job on a already black case..
I am not saying anything in paticular, I think that build is great!

Yeah I think that it looks awesome on the config page!  Confused

Oh, quick question.  When you select the "Paint Screw And Hose Clamps" option, do they also paint the disk drive bays?  Like in the picture?  Because the other option says that it will paint the "Vents And Grills".  Or do you have to tell DS specifically to paint those?  I would want my rig to look like the one in the picture.  I don't really like the Vents and grills being painted.  I think that it would be overkill, especially if you were going to light you rig the same color as the vents...then again, I haven't seen a picture with that config, so I really can't say.

lol I thought it was your friend best thing to do is just during the ordering process forget about the paint options I have chosen and simply tell them you want your HAF to look exactly like the one it the pic
