I am a geology tech that uses his computer for a lot of applications.  I work at home, so the computer is a real multitasking machine including gaming (Oblivion).  When I am working I am using ArcView 9.2, Canvas X, Firefox (at least 5 tabs), and Global Mapper, plus any number of others. These are on all the time and I shuffle between them constantly.  The files I use are up to and over 1.5 gigs, and I am really ready to move on in terms of performance and productivity from the sad setup that I have currently.

Being that this is the first time that I have ever tried to build a system, any thoughts?

Youd be better off with the 4870 ATI card in that config. It is a much better card then the 98GTX and it costs the same. As a bonus you can use more then one of them on your mobo you have selected should you find the need for more performance. If you select the 98GTX youre stuck with only that one card as that mobo does not support SLI.

I guess the speakers are alright, though they are only 20 bucks which would sorta make your sound card kinda a waste of money.  Newegg has a nice deal going on with the Z-2300 2.1 speakers, its 90 bucks + free shipping, they are  a better speaker to have to make use of your sound card.

Im curious about your very high power supply, any reason for this? With what you have selected you can easly go lower, 1000W and probably even less. Though im assuming you have a reason for this.

Everything else is alright, though if you know how to overclock you can save yourself some money there. Most people would recommend stage 3 air cooling as well, thats really up to you.

Thanks for the input.

The high Power supply was for no real particular reason.

I am going to be putting in my order at the end of the week.  Thanks all.

i think you can get way more power out of a price tag that high

leaves you almost 1000 bucks to pick up a way better monitor and keyboard/mouse
putting a stock MS keyboard and optical mouse on that beast would be so insulting id come to your house and slap you in the face

as far as a monitor, consider newegg options

and mouse keyboard, shop logitech

im really really against the "extreme" chips as ive seen so many high overclocks from ameteurs i dont see it worth the cost
dropped off the bluray becuase really who wants to watch that at their computer on a 24" monitor, obivously youre choice, just my thought
bumped the case and the cooling, for obvious reasons
even though you will not see the potential of ddr3 with that system, it will not be money wasted. im willing to bet that 4g of ddr3 would completely embarass 8g of ddr2

Depending on your backup habits, I ight be inclined to suggest moving to a 1TB drive setup in RAID 1. I had a few tweaks in mind. I do respectfully disagree with !ender about the relative merits of DDR3. The first CPU's that are likely to make proper use of DDR3 have not yet been released. I however do agree with him when it comes to the CPU. I also think that one of the places we are most apt to notice the speed increase of a new system is in time to desktop.

With these things in mind, I made a few changes to your config to think over:

Some of this may not be appealing, however, I do think that wih a screen size of 24" you will want the cross fired video cards. Otherwise, those super high resolutions, while easily accomplished for desktop by a single card, will really start to bog things down when you load up Oblivion (and presumably newer titles).

Since this machine is for both business and pleasure, I thought perhaps a mirrored array might be something you would want to consider. I left the majority of your selections as they were. The power supply was major overkill, so I reduced that to a very nice 1000W unit. You may not associate Corsair with  power supplies, as they are relatively new to the market, but they have shown a very high standard of quality and recieve rave reviews. These units are actually manufactured by Seasonic, which is both well established and respected in the industry.

I did change the CPU cooling to liquid. This will still alow the graphics cards to be updated without the need for altering the liquid cooling setup, while still allowing the CPU to be overclocked well past stock speds without the noise associated with a CPU fan at 100% or stage 3 cooling. I also dropped in a solid state drive for your operating system. This should have a noticable impact on the delay between when you hit power on, to the time you can get to work.

Tyler, when I went to that link, the configurator shows price at $5799, not $4799...
Was there a different configuration you meant to link to? Also, it indicated that everything was OC'ed except for the ram. I would think OC'ing the ram at the start would be easier than trying to do it later. I dunno tho. I still get confused over all the OC parameters myself. Tongue

That was a typo Kat, thanks.
With DDR2 800 I doubt you'd be looking a tightening the timings up much after pushing the MHz to OC. With 8GB of RAM, the potential for RAM OC is also greatly reduced, so I dropped that. I had meant to drop the GPU OC as well, that is typically not neccesary, and can be achieved just as easily with software if it is desired.

WOW.... did not expect this much feedback...

I appreciate the thoughts on what I might need, as you can tell I am a little man when it comes to these kind of things.

This just speaks volumes about this company and its people....
