here we go,
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=414985%20
Now, I'll admit, it comes to $1570 BUT
you get a free game, thats a $50-$60 value :)

pretty much anythign you could do to get those last few dollars would really be shooting yourself in the foot, you may save $10 here and $6 there with few changes, but it would not in any way be worth it

I put most of my budget into the video card as you can see. With this motherboard and cpu I had to give up chance to upgrade to 6 core cpu when they come out and hyperthreading. My game don't use hyperthreading and I don't have the money to upgrade anyway so thats no loss to me. The case has dust filters and looks sweet with the red fan lights in the front and rear. The side window shows off the digital storm craftsmanship on the inside.
The i5 overclocked to 3.5. The temperatures under game load for hours are quiet low. (49 to 54). Video card temp max has been 74 and that was only once.

For a tight budget you can drop down to a 5770 card and save $140. You can save $40 on the powersupply also, I went to 750 watt because that will allow me to add a second 5850 video card when my game expands to dx 11. (I am enjoying the eye candy and lack of lag now).
I got the 2 year parts and 4 year labor warranty during the recent sale. That extra year is a nice piece of mind. Its only $99 if you can swing it.

List your monitor resolution and computer uses and the guys will give you other good configurations.

Wow, Shar, thanks for the post! not only gave him an alternate to think on, but a mini review as well. I think I saw you pop up once before, and forgot to welcome your input.

S.R. - you've got 2 really good builds there. One's higher end than the other, but both will perform well. HP and Compaq computer products have not served me well, (laptops) and even if they had, I wouldn't trade one DS for any two of theirs. These guys are that good. Whichever system you decide on, it will be built by hand by technicians that not only know what they are doing, but care about how they do it. Rest assured.

be aware that all nvidia 4 series cards are power hogs, which is why I go with ATI's equally matched alternative, the 58 series. Radeon 5850 = GTX 470, Radeon 5870 = GTX 480.

considering what you configured, i think you might have a bit of wiggle room for a better cooler. obviously, DS doesn't specify a better cooler, but do a bit of research, include it in the notes, and they'll be happy to include whatever you want.

dunno what you want to do it or not, but personally, I'd prefer keeping the OS and data on two separate drives. the thing is, with one single drive handling both, anything you do that's intensive with data can affect performance of the OS, since they're both depending on the bandwidth of one drive.

You can switch to the P55M Mobo if you prefer and switch out the Power supply for the Corsair TX. The price comes out to about the same as you see here. According to Alex the PSU provided by them is high quality, so it's up to you, but at your res a 5870 or a 480 would be the choice for best possible gameplay. This system delivers that. If you have any more Q's feel free to ask.

The Corsair TX, eh, i really dunno whether that's a good or bad thing lol.

Anyways, ATI 5770 in here to conserve cost, and you got a nice 10,000 RPM drive for booting. Somewhat of a cost-beneficial tradeoff as opposed to having a boot SSD. Second drive is a niiice roomy 2TB to house all data separately from the OS and programs. Also popped in some case lighting, cus hey, who doesn't like aesthetics? And it's only $10 anyways.

Oh, and moving on to coolers. I had a nice experience with ThermalRight's Venomous X cooler, the RT version right now costs around $75. Replace the cooler you have now with it, and it'll set you $20 over budget, but it'll probably overclock a helluva better ;D

He has a 1080p monitor, a 5770 is a bad choice. Also no need for a dual core when you can get a quad in the same price range.

....ok, opting for the CM Scout 310, was about to do that.

bah, LGA1156 i7's, i never really understood them. honestly, IMO, if someone's gonna go i7, just go for the whole hog and get a LGA1136 i7. they're the ones that really give you respect anyways xD

if you want, considering what you have now, you can opt for a 10k rpm boot over the i7. its a matter of whether you want more cores, or you want faster loading speeds. then again, right now, barely any programs take control of the first four anyways. the i5 still emulates 4 cores via HyperThreading too, lol, so you'll still be good for the future.

That Velociraptor is a complete waste of money. The 1T with 32meg cache will perform nearly as well, if not better, and give you 15X the storage. Bet no one mentioned at 1/2 full, it's performance drops off the end of the table. You wanna pay extra for that?!!? My 1T fires up power on to desktop in 55 seconds, what you gonna beat me by?

S.R., DK why you want to go with 2 HDD's, but you need to know that your main drive will start to bog down at 1/2 full. It's true of any mechanical HDD. So in your config, you only have 125g effective for your boot drive. If that's enough, fine, then you've got a very easy to manage boot drive. The 1t 32 meg cache is 90% the performance of a 300g Velociraptor and probably beats that 74g due to the cache. Just so you know.
The Elite case is the worst choice for cooling. The front of the case is completely closed. The Storm Scout or the HAF 922 is what you need. If it's the case or HDD performance, the case has to win. You have to have airflow. This sytem will perform just fine with a smaller single drive. You can get an SSD later if that's bugging you. The 'raptor line is an obsolete dead end.

The 750 is a great processor and as this will be used for gaming there's no point in wasting the extra money on the 860. Hyperthreading is not needed for gaming. For his res you need a 5870 - 480. You will see a much bigger improvement in gaming by upping the gpu rather than the cpu.

No offense to anyone else here, but if you can't squeeze anymore money out of your budget, you're better off going with my build for that res, as you'll get the best gaming performance out of it.

my 150GB velociraptor at 70% full fires up to my desktop in around 40 secs...Confused

still, considering what i've heard about it from others, the 320GB 7200RPM drive is possibly a better choice.

only reason why I personally prefer two HDDs is because like you said, once a drive hits 50%, it starts bogging down in speed. if you've only one drive hosting both data and the OS, then the OS suffers as well. keep it on a separate drive which your much less likely to fill more than 50% because it isn't hosting data, and it won't bog down if the data drive does.

HAF, 5850, i5, 2HDDs, for $1475. Fits snugly in budget.

That's much better, thanks for taking my thoughts into consideration. But my concern is you've still got him blowing $121 on storage he won't need for months, if then. An HDD is the 2nd easiest thing to add later, when needed, right behind a sound card. It would be better if he just saved the dough 'til he needed it, or put it into a 5870 now.
I have to admit I know very little about the processors we're talking about here, but I think we should defer to Shar and Invader Mig on that, and quit shooting from the hip. Their advice has been solid IMO.

ahblahblah that i5 you have in your build is a dual core. In his situation downgrading the processor and gpu in place of hard drive space is a big mistake. If he has a need for extra space it's not hard nor expensive to throw in some extra drives. At his budget and res, the 750/ 5870 is the best route.

stick in the 655K unlocked CPU, it's $4 more for a lot more overclocking. in easier terms, it's $4 for a lot lot lot more performance.

lighting's optional, but it's only $10, fits in your budget too, and looks pretty dang good

Just make sure you have at least a 5870 squeezed into your budget. If you can spend some extra cash and want to go the nvdia route go for a gtx 480. The 750 is good enough for your gaming needs, and with a similar overclock you're not going to see any gains in games going with the 860.

Your gaming performance will definitely be superior with the ATI 5870. The CPU is not as much of a factor in gaming as video. Your last build is fine if you could just eke out that last bit for the 5870.

Drop the OS tweak, it's not needed anymore with Win 7, and these faster machines. It won't do anything for your performance, and it could disable something you want later.

You could free up some $ for video if you went to a 500 meg HDD, and dropped down to a P55 SLI mobo. Don't get the P55M, it's an inferior board. The P55 FTW would be nice, but it's high end features won't likely do much for you, and as we've said too many times all ready, video is where your performance will take off.
Otherwise, just pop for the 5870 and leave everything else alone if you can, except fot the OS tweak.

Don't forget when you're working this out, you have to add $65 shipping. Good luck.
