As impressive as Threadripper is with its 16 cores, it is mainly for content creation, 3D modeling and heavy mult-task applications. For gaming, which is still mainly a single or dual core task, you're better off with the 7700k and it's higher clocks. Plus a lot less money. Gaming benches show the 7700k beating the AMD offerings with their 6 core and higher.
Same for ram....8 gb is still for most but 16 gb has become standard. 32gb ram is too much. For 4k screen, the sli 1080 ti is a good pick. Hope this helps. |

If you're looking for strictly gaming, then I would wait until next month for the Coffee Lake processors to be released.

From what I'm seeing, the Coffee Lake is Nvidia's answer to the new 6 and 8 core AMD offerings. No performance increase, except better power for laptops, just a forced release. Gaming won't see a difference. Still better off with the fastest processor.
It will be the latest and no downside so whether one waits or not is up to them. |

Games are getting threaded (programmed to use more cores) these days. So, core count will help. But, if this mostly a gaming rig, I would go with Ryzen over Threadripper. Threadripper does offer a "Gaming Mode" which disables the cores in one die (8 of the 16) while still allowing access to the memory on the second die. Here is an article about that: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11726/retesting-amd-ryzen-threadrippers-game-mode-halving-cores-for-more-performance
One thing about the Ryzen/Threadripper platform is that it is AMD's first use of DDR4 memory. It has been a bit of a rocky start for them, and while now the situation is better, the memory speed and compatibility is still more limited than with Intel processors. But honestly, most games are gated by GPU(s) more than CPU. I would also make sure your display supports G-Sync, since that will help improve frame rates as well. G-Sync will also need to be supported in the game, but most top tier games are supporting it these days. Edited by danjw1 - 16 Sep 2017 at 8:50am |

Still 4 cores are more than enough for a gaming rig, test after test has shown it.
I have to agree with bp Keep in mind in most games as the resolution of the game you are playing goes up, the CPU becomes less of a factor and GPU becomes more of a factor. Edited by DST4ME - 16 Sep 2017 at 8:51am |

Thanks all for the input! It will only be used for gaming, as I have to use a Macbook Pro for my job.

IMHO go with stage 1 oc, this cpu stock speed is 4.3.
And perhaps a case with better air flow and /or room Also 16gb of ram is plenty for gaming. In the future, you can upgrade the CPU to a 16 core from this family if you wanted to, you just need to upgrade the CPU and ram (in this family 4 core uses dual channel ram, 6 core and above use quad channel). Of course we sacrifice speed for cores, example this cpu stock speed is 4.3, 6 core stock speed is 3.5(7800x) Edited by DST4ME - 16 Sep 2017 at 10:46am |

Keep in mind that the 7740x , pretty much the same performance as the 7700k, doesn't have integrated graphics on the motherboard where as the 7700k does. True that a separate graphics card will be used, it is nice to have igpu if ever you suspect a bad graphics card and want to run the monitor off just the mobo for troubleshooting or until a new card comes in. It probably won't be needed, but I always look for things to break.

Why would someone with a 6k budget settle for duel channel memory and only 16 pcie lanes? I'm in the same boat as OP and have also been waiting for the threadripper as an intel alternative since they've stopped delidding their chips. I'm asking as someone that is not an expert, but more of a dummy with a little too much money to spend.

Guess it depends if you are set on getting the performance you need or spending 6 grand on a pc.
If we are talking x299, that can easily be upgraded to 16 core cpu and quad channel ram if extra power is needed. Best way is to build the pc to max out games in your monitor's native res. To max 1080p or 1440p you don't need 6 grand pc, or more than 16x lanes Edited by DST4ME - 18 Sep 2017 at 12:46pm |

Appreciate the explanation. Those 4k monitors look awesome, but they don't seem to be wide enough. Is there any in the pipeline that are 34" wide like my predator? thx again.

Alienware just came out with a 100Hz native IPS 35" ultrawide I believe it is IPS and overclocks to 120Hz). I think both Acer and Asus have 35" 200Hz Ultrawides coming out (rumor is Q1 2018). They will be VA panels though I believe. All of the above mentioned are 3440x1440p. |
