I've been watching/configuring systems on DSO's site for the better part of the last 9 months. I was origanally waiting on the new Nvidia 9xxx series cards to come out, then found out they weren't going to be out for a long time (this was months ago). Finally a few weeks ago I decided to get QX9650 with an 8800GT 512....but then the 680i motherboard fiasco....
Now I'm thinking, I can live with the QX9650, with a Formula MB and the 3870 xfire setup....
should I wait for the 780i boards to come out or just go with what's available now? This has been months in going back and forth, I was actually one mouse click from pressing the order button this past week, but that's when I found out about the 680i compatability issues with the latest processor.
Thanks for any advice,
Will

Since you been waiting so long, the 780i motherboards will come out in the middle of December. It's only a matter of two-three weeks more.

I have a question about those 780i motherboards. Why don't they have a heatsink on them? it's quite a naked board if I may say so.

I am not sure what you mean but, the 780i has a massive heat-sink that goes over the: power moffett's, north bridge, and southbridge... |

Hey, Will. Here is my take on the gaming rig thing:
What ever you get now, just make sure its top end so that you are somewhat future proof for the future.
No matter how long you wait, as soon as you pull the trigger on any high end system, within a few months there is new, bigger and faster technology right around the corner.

Sounds like you have your heart set on a particular set up. The trouble I see is that your hardware choices are unproven. However, I am curious about the advantages you have selected over the system I have. Especially relative to the cost of the investment for the newest of the new. What performance advantage will you have over say my system...

Ugh, I had a huge post typed and I got the security code wrong below, and it went poof :(
So to boil it down to a short post, I want my machine to last as long as possible to I buy top end. I replace my machines every 3 to 4 years and really only upgrade my vid card every 12 to 24 months on them (if that sometimes). Heck, I had the same sound blaster live card follow me for seven years :)
Anyone heard anything about the Formula MB's with the 3870's in Xfire?
My current thought process is to buy the Xfire configuration and that should keep me happy all through 2008 and then just buy a 780i with the latest and greatest Nvidia in 2009. I have just always had Nvidia, that's why I havent' really considered ATI until now.
I'm also considering getting XP and 64-bit Vista on a dual boot, has anyone had any trouble with games running on 64-bit Vista? If not, then I may just go with it.
Thanks,
Will F

By 2009 the 780 won't be compatible with whatever CPU's(nehalem and beyond) and popular ram(most will require DDR3), as well as the Formula MB.
Essentially if you're looking for SLI and want a QX9650, wait for the 780. All that is different is the Tri-SLI, being compatible with the 45nm cpu's, as well as the PCI 2.0slots.
If you think crossfire is worth getting now and then adding a QX9650 later, get it. The motherboard is the same as the 780 just crossfire not SLI, but I don't think you can go Tri with it.
But futureproof for more than a year is nearly impossible these days.

I would imagine with QX9650, 4GB of Ram, the Formula MB with 2 3870's, I would be good till '09. Then I could buy a 780 MB or better and drop 2 or 3 98XX's in there and be good for another year. Right now, I have an Alienware 3.2Ghz P4 with hyperthreading, a 7800GT (AGP card by the way), 2GB of ram....it's lasted me since August of 2003. The only thing I've had to do is move from a NVidia 5950 to a 6800, then finally to the 7800. I've only felt the pinch of technology over the last year, but I squeezed everything I could out of this thing :)My only sticking point right now is whether the 780's will be out this month or Q1 of 2008. If I knew I would have to wait another 3 months before I could get that MB, I would be placing my order today. If I knew they would be available in a week or two, I will wait.
Thanks,
Will F

I still have a system with that GeForce 5950 still sitting my closet. I have sold my condo am very close to closing on a house and will give my sons their own rooms. I will be giving them my old PCs. So at least that 5950 that I paid like $600 for will actually get some use. It has to be the biggest card I ever saw at the time. It was obsolete the day I installed it. I didn't upgrade until I bought my Dell XPS laptop in 2003. I finally got a system I liked when I bought this beast from DS.
You sound like you you won't be happy unless you wait. You have waited this long for what you really want so you should wait a bit more... Edited by Monstromo - 05 Dec 2007 at 2:37pm |

If you are going to wait for the 780i, send me a PM with your name, number, and time zone. I'll add you to the waiting list.
