Yikes 64 pages, what a read. But what a read indeed, very informative. That Noctua D14 is a monster.
What Noctua does Digital Storm use? The U12P SE2? And how does it hold up to the bigger D14? |

d14 of course cools better, but the u12p is a great one too.

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/noctua_nhd14/4.htm
That site had it cooling only a couple of degrees cooler over the u12p. I still would have gone with the nh-d14 as it's only 10 dollars more. However, I can see alot of mobo's not fitting well with this giant cooler.
alex, are you guys seeing that this cooler is having size problems with any of the motherboards? Edited by AndydViking - 03 Feb 2010 at 7:32pm |

yes, they have some extremely powerful fans, gives a great picture as to the performance gain possible. anyone doing much overclocking, first thing they do is toss the stock fan. lol
Those other reviews are just crap, no high wattage tests, so not relevent to overclocked i7's, the frosty one anyways, plust they use the stock fans on some and aftermarket on others, just flawed testing perameters. the 212 is no where near the Noctua, not even close.

Where is there to test exactly? It has half the cooling area and half
the fans.
A quick Google search and 20 minutes of reading various reviews which all say basically the same thing tells me it is a value cooler. It isn't too bad of a value cooler either, offering decent cooling for the price, but performance wise it is no where near the quality of a big bad boy like the Noctua D14. Also some random downsides about it. It has the ability to mount a second fan but you would have to buy said fan, which hurts its value niche. The stock fan is loud because it relies on a higher 2000rpm setting for most of its cooling performance. A better quieter fan replacement would hurt its value. The fact that it relies on a high rpm fan setting for its cooling performance should speak volumes, it is working harder not better, and this greatly limits its peak cooling ability because you can only raise fan rpms so high. There are also issues with the mounting system being difficult and prone to problems. This seems like a case of you get what you pay for. |

again, all words, no data. Why the distaste for numbers?
having said that, you are right....for the most part.....problem is you are talking about the "14" model not the "12" model.
And you said it yourself.....it is a good value. And a 2000rpm fan is not
THAT loud...if it is then DS is providing crappy fans for sale on
their systems....
I am not saying it is better the the "14"....but we were talking about the one DS
currently sells.
In any case even your magnificent mighty Noctua falls at the feet of the mighy
winner and true champion of all coolers.....
Cheers

You are quite right, I did not provide any specific links, I did not feel the need to. I ask instead you simply go do a Google search and start reading the reviews.
Looks like you were talking about it to me, originally you said it beat all and at half the price. This is not true, but it does beat some similarly priced coolers. And I see no Noctua D14 in that Magahalem review you linked, only an old Noctua U12P. The U12P is not that magnificently mighty, but the D14 is. |

we seem to have our signals crossed so i will just agree with justin
and crown the Prolimatech Megahalem as king.
Now how about DS providing it as an option?
Cheers.

ok, so I will say it again, the review I posted has the Prolimatech in it, and shows its performance, and it is well behind the Noctua

Guys seriously, I don't think me or justin would even piss on some of these parts that some of these sites call the next best thing.
don't believe every review you see, as justin pointed out, details matter. if you take a mustang and put it on the road agains a car that is a tad bit slower but handles better, then have them do a race for quarter mile, then the mustang wins, and if you want to go around saying mustang is king you can, however you will be very disappointed as soon as you are on a road with turns and twists, you will find out your king is not much of a king at all. in short, unless you know every aspect of how a proper test should be done, so that you can tell when a site is missing some angles, then don't believe every review you read, instead listen to people like me and justin and the complete reviews we show you. For me, if I have to choose blindly, I would choose justin over any website. sure he makes the biggest deal about the tiniest little gains but thats because he is a benchmarker so tiniest things are a big deal to him, he just forgets from time to time that everybody is not looking at that way, but every time he has talked about a topic he has been on point, which more then I can say for these websites and their reviews. in short, forget hardwarecanucks, this is a perfect example of why, they just told you the wrong cooler is king. me nor justin work for Noctua and have nothing to gain by saying its the best. We do so, so that others that are trying to find the real answer in this sea of bs they call internet, can do easily. why do you think we donate our time helping so many people on this forum, we just want to help clear up the bs. |

wow....
first a request for DATA, not words,
now I get a discussion on cars....or is it a horse?
oh well,
still waiting for some DATA rather than OPINIONS
(always biased because it is impossible for any
human being, even the mighty justin), to be truly
OBJECTIVE. His opinion is based on his EXPERIENCE,
which WILL be different than many others....data + experience
preferred.
When you boil it all down, no data...means only opinion....lol
and
Cheers

emmsn no, sorry, its not a matter of opinion, the whole point of a proper test is to get rid of the bs opinion and give facts.
the data you need and both me and justin are pointing to are the data from his link he posted which is a million times more detailed test then the one you posted. opinion is what me and you think is the best, fact is when a proper test shows which is best, and then when me and justin point out the test results, that is not our opinion we are providing, its the facts from the proper, creditable test. opinions are dime a dozen, who cares about them. numbers speak for themselves and they say that Noctua cools better then Prolimatech Megahalem, thats a fact. you wanna call the Prolimatech Megahalem king based on a test that does not even include Noctua, and I'm the one that is all talk and no data? ITs tough for me, I have to check the testing methods first and see what the settings are first.
I like guru3d a lot tho, but IMHO nobody is perfect. Edited by DST4ME - 04 Feb 2010 at 6:44pm |

AndydViking is asking what I was...but in a better way.....is there a site, even ONE, that gives reliable testing data in an objective way with as little bias and "opinion" as possible. That is all we want...reliable DATA!!
If there isn't then this industry should shutdown and slink into the night like
the current Illinois and Washington politicians should.
And yes, we know nobody is perfect.
And thanks, finally, for a post pointing us in the right direction.
Cheers |
