Yeahhhh, I need the experience, so I'm gonna build my own rig. It's an early Christmas present... I mean, what do I look like building my rig ON Christmas?
Ordered all parts from Newegg today. Hoping they'll arrive sometime by the end of the week. Specs: HAF 922 Intel i5 750 Asus P7P55D 1156 Intel P55 motherboard Mushkin Silverline 6GB DDR3 1333mhz Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 750GB XFX GTX 260 (I plan to go SLI later) Corsair Hydro Series H50 CPU cooler Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Onboard sound Cooler Master Silent pro 700w You guys got any tips for building a computer? This is my first time, and I'm really excited and I've been doing my research but I don't want to terribly screw up anything. Pics will come later, that's a promise. |

My only complaint is that power supply, if you plan on overclocking you will have a hell of a time. Reliability is probably not the greatest either.

Good luck with your system.
You are totally gonna need it. I hope you have some friends who have built a system before to call on, cause this is not something you do without previous experience. |

Any recommendations for a power supply?
I'm not going with x58 because I really don't need the Xeon down the line. I have a Q8300 right now, and it handles everything that I throw at it really well (which is quite a lot as I do video editing, flash, gaming, lots of local webserver testing) so I could imagine that the i5 would be more than enough for what I need. I'm not really going for cutting edge here... just something that's a bit high-end and not just another "HP" "Dell" or "INSERTMASSPRODUCEROFOCOMPUTERSHERE" If I really need it, the board allows for an upgrade to i7. |

Congratulations!
Building your own and loading ALL the software is a excellent learning experience. It can be aggrevating but you will learn much. Don't get worried if it doesn't power up the first time. You WILL have problems during the build but you will get them worked out. You CAN do it.
Recomendations:
Go to NAPA, NOT AutoZone or O'Reilys, NAPA. Reason: there is a big difference in the QUALITY of the stuff you are going to need. NAPA has the good stuff.
Small zip ties. I recomend black because they are designed for outside use and will not become brittle or break as fast as the white ones.
1/4" internal diameter "wire loom". This is the wire cover that is necessary for that professional look. They sell it by the foot.
Small "sticky backs". Get the small ones, approx 1/2" by 1/2". These can be placed wherever you wish as a anchor point for the zip ties.
I strongly recomend you buy a grounding wrist strap, they don't cost much. Many of them have a bananna type plug that can be inserted in the ground hole of houshold recepticles.
Don't use cheap bent up/abused screwdrivers. If you have to buy new decent ones then do it. Once again get good stuff. Sears hand tools are fine. A pair of the SMALL diagonal cutters will be needed(for zip ties) and a mini-mag flashlight will help to get a good close bright look at everything.
Follow directions when applying the heat transfer paste between CPU and cooler. In this case, MORE is not better.
I hope this info. helps. If there is anything I can help you with, I will do my best to try and answer any questions you have.

Riffraff's advice is all good.....
There are many web sites that cover all the steps in building a PC. Use Google!
Read all the documentation that comes with the mother board and the case at least a couple of times.
The hardest part about building a (simple) PC is getting all the switches and lights on the front panel to work 8>). Edited by Bill the Cat - 11 Nov 2009 at 10:36am |

@Seelig, my dad is pretty adept with computers, and I hope he can help me a bit... thanks for the token of good luck!
@rifraff, thanks so much for that, man. Gonna try to do some of the things you suggested. @Bill, yeah, using Google, it's such a life saver! :P and lol. |
