My order is at stage 3 so I started doing a little research to see what the best way will be to 'move in' when my pc gets here. i have been trying to get rid of files that i don't want to keep but i still have alot of photos, music and...err...stuff to move
![]() I currently have photo/music/video collections on a 1TB HD on my dell xps gen 4 xp machine. There used to be something called settings transfer wizard back in the day...I'm guessing applications just have to be installed the old fashioned way...one at a time. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on the best/most efficient way to get all my stuff to my new machine. What about game files? Do i have to hunt them down on my hard drive (ex: Guild Wars, WOW, Mass Effect, DAO, etc)? Does going from xp32 to win7/64 create any compatibility issues with files? Thanks for the help. I don't really want to spend all day looking for pst files when i could be playing Starcraft II! |

If you don't have an external hdd windows vista+(and 7) have something called windows transfer or something like that. It works with xp and u can transfer stuff by lan. With games backup them to some cds or usb. Steam has a great backup games tool

You can't put apps and stuff that use regkeys from xp on to win7 64bit, also the file structure is a bit different. for example for xp, some games and apps's settings are under document and settings\user\application data\app folder here.
for win7 64 bit the path is different, it would be document and settings\user>application data\roaming\app folder here. when I moved from xp to win7 64bit, to move opera from my xp as it was to win7, I had to manually edit the correct path like 20 times in 8 different files, but it worked lol, same with my ftp pro, the key was to use the same user name on the win7 as I did in my xp and then edit the needed files. I don't think you would be doing that, so for apps and games that need regkeys, you have to reinstall them, games and apps that don't use regkey, may be able to run as they are. |
