its preference, this is a super old debate.. i choose to leave mine on all of the time because in my non expert opinion, it is easier on your hardware to be on all the time then turned on and off daily. this coupled with the convenience of it always being on when you need it and the small difference it makes in yearly electric bills causes me to leave mine on all the time
with my newer computer, ive actually been testing out sleep mode, which seems to work pretty well. i dont know the intracacies of it, all i know is that the computer appears to shut completely off (lights/fans all off) and when i come back i tap spacebar and im at the desktop in a couple seconds.. from what ive read, in this state the computer draws a minimal amount of power and saves your state in RAM so you can jump right back to it
long story super short, do whatever you want lol
but do be sure to restart your computer or turn it off about once a week for good measure

Thanks for the super fast responses as always !ender, you are on the ball!
Yeah, as long as everything in the machine stays cool, i'll probably just leave it on. I did notice that when i put mine into "sleep" mode none of the lights turn off. When i put it in "hibernate" mode, they definitely do, but then it takes forever to come back and i might as well turn the whole thing off. Anyway, yeah, i always reboot my machine at least once a week as i know that is good practice with anything running a windows OS. Thanks again. |

Some BIOS's let you change the way sleep mode is handled (ie S1 vs S3). On my Wifes MSI mobo, one of the settings keeps the fans on and power supplied to the USB keyboard (allowing her to wake from keyboard), the other setting turns the fans off and stops power to the keyboard - I can't remember which setting is which

Ah hah!! Thank you for bringing this to my attention. ![]() I checked Lilim's BIOS options and sure enough under Power Management there's the option for S1, S3, and a S1&S3 (hybrid?) sleep modes. It was on S1 by default, so I selected S3, which also brought up a new option of enabling or disabling USB KB Wake-Up From S3. Score one from EVGA. So testing it out, oddly enough the Hibernation option is completely gone from my Start Menu, but Sleep does indeed now shut down everything, USB keyboard, USB mouse, fans, lights, etc. And I can just press a button on my USB keyboard (Logitech G110) and be back at the desktop in 5 seconds. Thanks JJJJ_Shabadoo. |

eh, X58's have been plagued with sleep options before. I know early X58 mobo's couldn't do it at all (looking at my first XFX X58i, once it went to sleep, everything stayed powered on except for the OS. you had to force shutoff because it never came back
).

Good information, Does anyone know if these BIOS sleep setting changes apply the same way for the P55 motherboard?
