So here is an interesting quandary for us to discuss.
With these high performance systems is it better to turn them off for periods of non-use (sleeping/workday) or leave them running 24 hours? I can see arguments on both sides. (power off) Pro: Saves energy costs. Saves wear and tear on read/write on SSD main drives. Water cooled systems wear and tear? Noise levels if the system is in a bedroom/TV room. (power off) Cons: Heat stress on CPU and other components (going from room temp to running temp every day) Water cooled systems have a chance to "settle" and start-up hard on the pump over time. Harder on HDD's meantime between failure rates. Auto-update patches are ready to go when you are out. This is just a short list of things I have been pondering. What do you folks think? BTW Alex, since I know you are reading this. I received my Slade system in perfect running order. I will review and pictures soon... ;) |

idk for my current (mini dell laptop) i never leave it running 24hours unless it is doing something first to save up on the electricity bill :P and secondly i might be worried about it getting overstressed but for the days i leave it 24 hours it does just fine i remember once having it a full week running without battery in it but still worked just fine just had to make sure i had my cooling stand working so it won't overheat as for watercooled systems i never had one and probably never will since i'm not a big fan of desktops :)
all in all i suggest to not leave your computer running 24 hours unless you need it to do something ... ;) |

IMO, there is no reason to leave it running if your going to be away from it for hours. Unless of course you have stock in your electric Co. MY DS Rig is over 2 years old, I turn it off every night, and have had not 1 issue since it arrived.

Unless your using your computer for such things as folding@home or seti@home I would turn off your computer when you are not actively using it.
