I'm trying to quiet down a noisy exhaust fan screwed to the back (inside, up top) of my case.  If I replace the fan with something that has about 60% of the CFM, would I get roughly the same cooling if, in addition to replacing it with the lower CFM fan, I added a second identical (lower CFM) fan on the top of the case (or even two identical fans on top, as there is space for it)?  In other words, I'd replace the one higher CFM fan with 2 or 3 lower CFM fans.

The details:

- Silverstone T-09 case (used to be the Extreme case here, now it is the 950si).

- The exhaust fan is a Silverstone Everflow, with specs of 2000 RPM, 54.16 CFM, and 32.5 dBA.

- I'm  looking at three Sythe S-Flex fans.  There's a 63.7 CFM 28.0 dBA version; a 49.0 CFM 20.1dBA version; and a 33.5 CFM 8.7 dBA version.

If it will keep it cool enough and be quieter, I'd like to put the 8.7 dBA one where the current exhaust fan is, and in one or two of the fan spots on the inside top of the case.

Any thoughts?

I will be able to answer this one for you on Tuesday Venture. I'll be replacing an 80mm fan with 2x70mm fans, and have 4 Scythe S-Flex 64CFM models coming as well. I am intent on replacing the CPU's HSF fan, intake fan, exhaust fan, and cutting a hole in my side panel for a 120mm side intake, in addition to installing 2x70mm Evercool fans in my two empty drive bays, which I intend to regulate with a Silverstone 3.5" drive bay fan controller Cool.

I had intended to post my results anyway, and will happily report back on how things go.

Venture, the S-Flex fan is amazing. It's really, really quiet even at full speed. I can't hear it over the feint whining coming from the Dominator RAM Cooler I installed. Seriously, it's really nice. This is the highest CFM fan they offer I am talking about.

Also, note to DSO on stage 3 cooling: I would nix the 80mm fan and drop in 2x Evercool 70mm fans if someone has two empty bays instead of 3x 5.25" drive bays. Holy airflow. I have then hooked up to a Silverstone fan controller to keep things quiet when I want it that way, but at full bore I would put these two little fans at about the 80CFM range. Even with both set to low, they are crushing the air flow of my old Antec 80mm fan.

Thanks for the update, Tyler.  I did end up ordering two of the slower, lower flow S-Flex fans, and the middle one mentioned above.  They should be here today or tomorrow.  I'll probably start by putting the two lower flow ones in the back and top of the case to see if that adequately replaces the single Silverstone, and then put the other one in the slot between my hard drive cages.  I'll report back some before and after temperatures once I'm up and running.
