Topic: Two rigs one monitor Posted: 19 Jun 2008 at 7:58pm |
Ok.... when my new DS pc arrives with a new monitor could I hook my other box up with it and use one monitor, keyboard and mouse? The reason I ask is that my wife could use the box we have now(A Dell that has been very good to me) and I could have my DS all to myself. What hardware is necessary? (KVM switch?). And if I did this could she still use her printer? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes, you just need a KVM switch to share a monitor, keyboard, and mouse with different computers. To use a single printer with multiple computers, you will need a router.

I have a modem/router. How would I connect that up? Also would a 2 port KVM switch be ok?

A 2 port KVM allows for two computers so yes it should be ok if you don't plan on adding more.
You need to setup a network for your two PCs and have the printer installed into one of them. Then you follow these steps (this is for windows XP but it's quite similar in Vista)... 1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and Printers and Other Hardware. 2. Open the Printers and Faxes folder. You should see every printer installed on the PC. 3. Select the printer you want to share. 4. Click Printer Tasks in the left window. 5. Choose Share this Printer. 6. Give your printer a unique name, preferably something easy to remember. 7. Click OK. Now you need to add the printer to other machines that will use the printer. 1. Navigate to the Printer folder. 2. Click Add a New Printer. 3. Select Network Printer instead of Local Printer. 4. Locate the correct printer on the network. 5. Click OK. 6. Run a Windows printer test to make sure everything works. |

The host pc to the printer needs to be turned on to be able to see the printer at al times. Does ur printer have a cat5 connection in back?

with how cheap you can get a monitor these days you may be better off just getting one instead of a switch, it would likely be a lot less hassle becuase you can use both at the same time if you like

Thank you for the info folks...I really appreciate it. I'll probably just put this pc in another room for her. She does transcription.
