first off let me say that you will not need the 3960x or 3930k unless you are doing very heavy video rendering, the 6 core processors or more geared towards work related applications, from what i read intels original plan was to have sandybridge E be 8 core processors but they had stability problems or something so we get the 6 cores, and the xeon is 8 core. now i am planning on purchasing an x79 setup but the way i am looking at it is i am getting the 3820 and overclocking, " every forum i have read on says even though the 3820 is not unlocked it overclocks the same just a little more work" but nothing that you cant learn to do. to get back to my point unless you will be doing video rendering etc you will not see much of any increase in your games performance when comparing the 3960, to the 3820 especially an overclocked 3820, so the benefits are the savings plus the more important aspects you are getting pcie 3 with the x79 plateform, also from what i have heard ivybridge e will be on the lga 2011 socket so when ivybridge e is released you will have more money to invest in the top end processors that they have to offer. this is just my 2 cents,
also you might consider switching your dedicated sound card to the xonar stx or titanium hd by creative labs, imo the benefits you get from these cards outweigh the recon 3d. but if you want i am sure you will be happy with whatever card you choose. Hope i helped, feel free to ask any questions |

also another money saving tip i would strongly recommend getting all your gaming peripherals at a site like neweg for example you will save money and have a much larger selection, for me i have the razer mamba 2012 and i love it, but to each their own.

Hi Artifex,
I like building ultimate gaming computers. What is the configuration number for your build? There are ultimate gaming computers and there are ultimate gaming machines that just buy everything that cost the most. Here on this forum we try to build powerful machines but not waste money on things you don't need. Some people want the most expensive everything for bragging. So we need to know what is important to you. I think we can really improve your system but we need your budget. Also need to know if 3D is important to you? Building a gang buster 3D machine can really push up the cost. Are you planning to play on multiple monitors on just a single monitor? If you really want a killer gaming experience forget the 3D, forget the Asus and get the Dell 30" IPS monitor. Frank Edited by FrankW - 24 Apr 2012 at 1:58pm |

When it coms to gaming I do belive that you are going way overkill on the PC. May of the games on the market will not be able to take full advantage of your hardware.
I would recommend getting the 2600k processor, 8GB of RAM, Stage 1 overclock, H100 cooling system and only one 680 video card. The GTX 680 is already super powerful as is and the only real benefit you're getting by getting two is now you can plug in more monitors. |

I do not want the computer for bragging rights, I guess I'm just trying to "future proof" my PC so I won't have to upgrade for a very long time. I have thought about double monitors but have never actually tried it. The computer is for 100% gaming, I do not plan on doing anything else on the computer besides gaming. If you could help me improve the rig I would really appreciate it, thanks in advance! Artifex |
