Topic: Unable to install an msi file Posted: 14 Sep 2011 at 7:37pm |

Got my new computer today.
Been having a hell of a time installing mumble, which is a voice chat program. their installer is an msi file. tells me "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package." I contacted the makers of mumble and they weren't very helpful, told me it was a windows installer problem so i went to update my windows installer. I'm running windows seven home premium. So there aren't any updates for the installer. I have a friend running windows seven ultimate and he can install the program just fine. I play world of warcraft and the people i play the game with have been able to install it just fine as well. I had a similar problem on my old machine, which was running windows vista. I had to use a bat file of some sort to install it. but i can't find the information i found before concerning this. when i extract the msi file and run the exe for mumble within it tells me i am missing MSVC100.dll but i'm not, i went into system32 and found it. I know the techs at digital storm tweaked my operating system, which i was afraid of having them do but i thought i'd try it, and now it seems this is what i get for experimenting. I went to the microsoft website and they are going to charge me for assistance on this problem and referred me back to you guys. SO.. Please help. Been trying to fix this problem for 5 hours now. |

are you on win7 32bit or 64bit? what about yoru friend that is running it?
the os tweak may have something to do with it, or it may not. let me know the above info and then we can try a few tricks but right now I have to go, be back in like 4 hours, sorry have to take care of stuff. what is happening is that the installer is not compatible with your build and/or its not able to find its way around your os, which is why it can't find files you have on your system. You have the latest installer mumble, do they say it supports win7 64bit?
I know your friend has it but that does not necessary means its supported. |

I looked on their website and couldn't find a definitive answer to whether or not mumble is 64bit or 32bit, i found a dead link that is named 32-bit mumble download, but it is dead and just links back to the page it is on.
I went and downloaded an older version of mumble that is an exe and i was able to install it just fine. I guess I will have to see how it goes. I really would rather not have to completely redo my systems operating system on a hunch it might fix this problem and the only reason I'm bothering in the first place is because voice communication in raids in world of warcraft not only helps the functionality of game play to be more efficient, it also improves the quality of play and player to player interaction. Thank you for your help DST, if you wish to continue helping me find a way to get the latest (less buggy) version of mumble installed, i would greatly appreciate that. |

right click the new installer>properties>compatibility>here check "run this program in compatibility for"> then chose xp sp3, and see if that helps.

I know DST4ME is helping you, and he is more knowledgeable than I, but I have a couple things you can check that will probably help the process along.
1. Have you checked to make sure your Windows Installer Service is running properly? Start > Search Box > Services.msc . Look for the service titled Windows Installer and make sure that it has not been disabled. 2. Also, if you open a command prompt and type: "SC Query MSIServer" without any quotes do you get any errors? Edited by Tidgxor - 15 Sep 2011 at 9:31pm |

Thanks for tipping in Tidgxor.
I have activated the installer service on my pc and i did the query. That's one of the many remedies I've tried that didn't work, though i did leave the installer service active. Just for kicks this is what the query returned SERVICE_NAME: MSIServer TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS STATE : 1 STOPPED WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) CHECKPOINT : 0x0 WAIT_HINT : 0x0 |

Ah, was worth a shot! I'm guessing you already tried unregistering and re-registering the service then?
Command Prompt: msiexec /unreg > wait a little bit > msiexec /regserver Just in case you hadn't tried it. |

@Muezick, for msi files there is no acutall option listed, my mistake, just check the box and choose "previous version of windows"
you can try what tidgxor said also, those would be things we would check later but you can do them now also. |

This didn't do anything. I did try it before, but tried it again at your suggestion and still didn't nothing.
That's so strange, in a microsoft support forum, one of the first links you get if you google search the actual and entire error message i posted above, has a microsoft rep telling another customer to change the compatibility mode. Which is one of the first things i tried, when i didn't see anything in the list I misread it to think it read "For all previous versions of windows" and assumed that was all I could do. But now I see there isn't any compatibility, based on what you've told me. So is there some official channel i should go through to contact digital storm, since i'm not getting any attention from actual DS techs here doing this. |

you need to check the box and then from the drop down menu choose "previous version of windows", win7 will automatically decide what version itself in the background.
for DS support you need to contact them direclty, but they are not gonna tell you anything different unless they ask you to reinstall windows. Edited by DST4ME - 16 Sep 2011 at 1:50am |

I manually started the installer service and verified the compatibility mode for previous versions of windows was activated.
Neither the steam client, nor mumble 1.2.3 produced any results other than the failure message posted in the original post of this thread. =( |

Wierd... I would say, since it's a new system, a fresh re-install of Windows might be the best thing to do. It's actually very easy to install Windows, and we do have a guide that is on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak8aXy4a1m8 start watching from 1:40 for a walkthrough.

I've reinstalled windows many many times in the past, it's just very very low on my list of things that I want to do with my brand new computer after getting it in day before last. Especially considering that this problem is most likely resulting from the "operating system tweaks" I hesitantly selected in my system build. Should've really trusted my better judgement with that one I guess. I've nearly gotten everything re-installed and set up the way I Like it. Alex, do you suppose a 'repair' might work instead? Is there any way an on staff windows expert, if you have such a thing, could chime in? |

I don't believe the OS tweaks have caused this. You can use the built-in Windows Restore utility to restore your system back to the earliest day possible which should not have the OS tweaks.
Doing a repair install is also a great idea to try. Our support staff usually does not use the forums, as they are busy with customers that call in/send a message to be contacted. However, I did find a guide on how to do a repair install: http://windows7.iyogi.com/installation/windows-7-repair-installation/

It is a relief that the OS tweaks made shouldn't be responsible. Perhaps I should send in a message or make a phone call. I was just really hoping it could be resolved without that. I may try hitting up steam to see if they have any solutions available as well. going to hit up that guide in a little bit and see what I can figure out. Will report back later today. Hopefully. |

the tweaks could be a problem actually, or might not, I would not rule it out 100%.
repair might do, or it may not, if its a service that msi needs and has been disabled it could fix it. but I don't think its your services yet. look in services and make sure rcp is also running. then open a command prompt and type in there sfc /scannow and see if it comes back with no problems. is there an error number you get when you try to install anything msi? Windows Resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
I found something called Remote procedure call (RPC), which is started and set to automatic Below it is also Remote procedure call (RPC) locator, which was NOT started (its started now) A little below it is something called RPC Endpoint Mapper, which is also started and automatic. I don't know what RCP is, i'm guessing thats a typo? Either way, Still no progress. there is no error number, just the dialogue. Here is a screen shot |

Now I have a whole new problem.
When I download from the internet via my web browser or while I'm trying to install EVE online (they have an application you download and install that downloads the rest of the files to install) it blocks my DNS some how so i can no longer browse the web. |

Seems that there is no values there. the name is (default) and the type is REG_SZ and there is no value set for the data. I did some research, seems this is part of the windows customer experience improvement program? I went to disable it entirely and its already disabled. This seems like something that would be tweaked by Digital storm reps since they are tweaking the OS for performance, disabling this and everything related to it could very easily fit into something they'd do. I checked and half the keys in this area have no values. Only CommonDatapoints has any values. |

No I don't think so. I mean, I don't know how to check the services, i will check on the versions. Seems up to date i downloaded it, and ran it, and there was an option for repair ,so i am doing that. and after the reboot no change in progress |

Right I know that Im not sure which services are associated with it, i mean ...
Okay sorry i was being really retarded, I know how to access the services list, i just thought for some reason the name of the services associated with the .net framework wouldn't be obvious. I went into the services list and found that the ones associated with .net framework 4 are active, and the ones for 2 were deactivated, i set the ones for 2 to automatic. lets see how this goes.. annnd nope. also, you can access the services a lot quicker then that by simply typing services in the runbox under All programs in the start menu and selecting the one with the two gears for the icon. |

Well for accesing it, that is the main way you tell people if you are not sure if they know or not.
but for quick access, actually go to your system32's folder locate services.msc and then make a shortcut for it on your desktop, from that point on you just click on it and viola, the services window, I have it on my quick launch bar. ok set teh ones you changed back to disabled. so both steam and this file give you teh same exact error right? "the installation package could not be opened"? |
