I have to halt on one part of the missing piece. That is the the right video card. I can't choose between a dual 4870 X2 and 3 SLI GX 280. There saying in other reviews that the ATI 4870 X2 has better performance than the SLI 280. On the other hand the SLI 280 gives out better performance and also better resolution. Can someone get me out of this devistating desicion.

Ive had my fair share of ATI cards and I never liked their drivers. Id go for 2 280s then slap another in when needed. But as for now even one 280 can handle pretty much anyhting.

I think you should wait till JAN and see how the new nvidia GTX 295 perform like first, you could just go with 2 of those. |

The contest between two 4870 X2's vs three 280 GTX's is pretty dang close. Some games will be faster with ATI, and some will be faster with Nvidia. About a month ago Nvidia had a slight lead, but now ATI looks like it's barely ahead.
I personally prefer Nvidia, because of recent problems I had with ATI. However, there are many people on this forum who would recommend ATI. If you don't have a particular brand preference, then just get the ATI cards first. They will be cheaper, and may work just fine. However, buy them from a place that has a good return policy. If you run into any problems, then return them and get the more expensive Nvidia solution. Either way you're going to have amazing performance. |

Actually, I second what DST4ME said. If you can wait till January, then just wait for the new Nvidia cards. I'm quite sure 3 of the new cards will beat two 4870 X2's.

Nevermind, you can't put 3 of those cards in a machine. Either way, waiting until January might be a good choice. (Unless you're like me and can't wait.) |

he won't need 3 cards, the new cards are gonna be comparable to the 4870x2 so it would be either 2 x ATI or 2 x new Nvidia cards.
but we don't know how the new cards are going to perform yet. |

Damn, you guys are spraying the money out...
In lot of cases a little OC here and there and you get some very nice $\performance ratio!! ...no need spending a lot of money on the latest GPUs that come out instantly... but thats just me.

Explain to me how two 260's using a dual-PCB design is going to rival a 4870X2. It's possible it'll compete closely but based off of specs the 4870X2 is still going to be superior (especially in CF).
2 4870X2's are going to beat dual 280's. 2 4870X2's will be tied/slightly better than 3 280's. However, the 4870X2's are beating the 280's in a majority of games and will cost less and take up less space on your mobo (use a PCIe slot for a nice sound card etc.). |

I have a hunch the 4870 X2 will continue to be the leader, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the 295 GTX pulled ahead. I can't wait to see the benchmarks. |

lol, theyr arent gonna let ATI take away so easily... just wait and see, imho the 295gtx will probably beat the 28770x2 in every aspect.

That's what I want to know. I have my sights set on the GTX 260 right now and possibly another later. Will I be wasting money? I don't want to get it now and the 285/295 are announced in January and the prices get reduced by another $50-100. Is it certain that both the 285 and 295 are being RELEASED or just announced in January? I've been searching for the right place to buy a Gaming Desktop, I found it on here, now I just want to get it over with. Someone give me some good advice!! Also, with the dropping of video card prices, will it trickle down to MOBO's/Processors? Meaning, instead of getting a Duo Core 2 E8400 should I wait a month and see if the E8600 or Q9400 Quad Core comes down in price? Thanks in advance. |

Technology is always a bad investment.
Purchase now and enjoy it or you can wait for price drops that might or might not happen. Wait to buy new products and you might get lucky with an amazing purchase (8800 GTX which held performance crown for nearly 2 years) or you might end up being totally screwed with a giant price drop within first month of release (iphone, gtx 260/280), end up with a more expensive rebranded product (9800 GT/GTX), or end up with something that fails to perform (HD3870, Phenom). The fact is that once most people make their purchases, they won't care about price drops or new products as long as their computer performs amazingly compared to their old one. |

Amen, I think you should get the most you can afford now and fire away!!!! You will be very pleased and as for the new cards by Nvid it has been mentioned that they will not ofer such a huge advantage over the 280 and 260...I would carve my purchase into stone right now ..
