I have dual 8800 ultra water cooled, I'm pretty sure you can't water cool dual gtx 280s. Would it be worth it to switch for it, would there be a big performance difference? Thanks.

Well, aside from the GTX280 being newer, I would hold the question to upgrade or to not upgrade to the usual test: Does your 88Ultra SLI setup not do something you want it to? I mean, aside from one very asthetically pleasing, but mediocre game (Crysis), what can't an 88Ultra pair handle at maximum visual settings? Maxed settings at great frames isn't going to get any better in terms of game experience regardless of how it registers on FRAPS. If you do game at resolutions of 2560x1600, then this card should outperform your current cards by a good margin. |

If your willing to spend $700, sure. Personally. I'd just cram a second (or for that price, a third) Ultra in there instead.

Im keeping my GX2's mostly due to the fact I dont play that high of a resolution. Ive tried 1900x1200 on various games, but i dunno, either my GX2 is underperforming, or its overheating. It idles at 72C and during games like crysis it will run load in the upper 90s..considering its not overclocked, thats pretty high. I still say its due to the top fans blowing in, like i said, im gonna try to flip them this weekend, see if it has any effect.

I have SLI'd 8800 Ultras and contemplating doing a SLI 280 setup but man that would be overkill considering I only run 1920x1200. I would however like to have better frames in Age of Conan but I believe that game has trouble with SLI. I probably won't need to upgrade for another year.

i've been thinking about upgrading to 2x GTX 280s only because I currently use a 30 inch monitor- however it would be sooo much money and work since i'd have to upgrade to at least 780i and reroute my cooling system to only cool the processor or build a second loop. I'm thinking of throwing in a 3rd ultra, but then i'd have to buy a new power supply...ehhh- maybe it would be better to wait a year or year and half and just restart. |

Before spending the money on a third Ultra...I would have to consider the price to performance ratio. Ultra's aren't exactly cheap, and I have read a number of articles where the benchies indicate that most games do not see a signficant improvement going from dual sli to tri sli. Now maybe there is more current information out there that debunks my statement, but I would question whether the improved graphics performance outweighs the additional costs associated with purchasing a third card and the increase power consumption that will accompany tri sli. |
