Hello everyone. I purchased a nice pre-built rig from DS around 2.5 years ago. With certain games releasing at the end of the year, I was thinking about the possibility of upgraded some parts. I'm only an amateur at this sort of thing- social worker by trade- so I was hoping to get some advice.

I used Speccy to bring up the following. Any advice would be welcome!

i7 920 that DS OC'ed to 3.3ghz.
Vista Home Premium
EVGA 132-BL-E758 motherboard (X58)
6 RAM slots currently with DDR3 @662 (9-9-9-25)
1024MB GeForce GTX 285

I looked over my RAM because I seem to only be getting 4 gigs out of it. I tried to remove a stick, powered back up and it said I went down to 2 gigs of RAM! I'm thinking replacing all six sticks with three newer (1600?) 2 gig sticks will be an improvement but I'm not sure. I remember a long time ago DST4ME gave me advice that you need to match up the 9-x-x-x numbers, although I don't know what that means. I looked on Newegg and for the love of me I could not find 9-9-9-25 sticks. Help?

That 285 GTX was a great card back in the day, although I looked around and apparently it isn't made anymore. I take it that installing a second in SLI would not be practical then since it's 2+ year old tech. DS did a good job of wedging that massive card into the rig tho. I'm not sure if I can get it out and replace with a newer card. Recommendations?

Thank you in advance for your time. I apologize for my newbie questions. Any input is appreciated!

Charles

thats vista 64bit right?

what size psu do you have?

sounds like one of your sticks is not working, we have to test them, your ram should be 1600 or 1333mhz I don't think you have much to gain from upgrading them, but give us a screenshot of CPU-z's "spd" tab please.

upgrade gpu to a 570 gtx and then see if you want a second to begin with or not, you can get the 285 out easy.

I'll post it for you, it's because you don't have enough forum posts to post links yet:

thank you Alex

your ram timing is 9-9-9-24 and its 1333MHz, the numbers you are looking at is your ram with a bit of change due to oc.

so you got 6 sticks of 1GB? maybe its better to go with 3 x 2GB sticks, but you will have to call DS to redo your oc.

here is mushkin ram

or

if you want better cas here is corsair

in teh above corsair line the Model CMX6GX3M3C1600C7 is preferred for your use and has a cas 7.

with that psu you gonna want to run only one 570.

how about upgrading hdd1 to a nice intel 120GB 320 series ssd?

Thank you both. I think I will pick up the Corsairs. I can swap out memory sticks easily enough but I have a question on that: since I'm going from 6 x 1 to 3 x 2, which slots should I put the sticks in? 1,2,3 or 1,3 5? Assuming 1 is the slot closest to the CPU. Also, only my CPU is OC'ed, not the sticks. Would I still need to call support?

I don't feel confident about adding a new hard drive myself. Never done that before.

What 570 would you recommend?

regular evga 570 gtx is the one you want.

adding a hdd/ssd is very easy, you just screw in the drive, and then connect teh power cable already there from psu, and a sata data cable.

the new stick go in to the green slots, your ram settings do change a bit when you oc the cpu, so with new ram, there should be new settings, just call DS and they gladly walk you thru.
