thanks in advance!!
Im trying to keep a few bucks in my pocket till my job isnt so uncertain.
I was hoping to get some opinions on upgrading my tower to allow me to play some of the newer Direct X10 games.

What I have is a AMD FX-55 {socket 939} Zalman 9500 CPU cooler in a DFI LanParty UT SLI-DR EXPERT, 4gig's of OCZ Platnum DDR 400, EVGA 7950GX2  PCI-E X16, 2 WD 74g Raptors in raid 0 ,  all in a coolermaster Mid tower case cant remember which one,,  antec true power2 550 power supply. XP 32bit pro

what I was thinking is maybe I could get a FX -60 which is a x2 or dual core, or some another socket 939 dual core { I dont know the model #'s of the CPU's} and a newer Video/Graphic's card... buy a Vista OS.

What do you think is the best bang for the money
Thanks
Dog

I'm not good with amd so I'm not sure what to tell you as far as cpu goes.

as far as higher gpu what were you looking at?

go with vista 64bit so you can use your system's total ram.

Thanks for the Reply!

Gpu wise I'm looking for something that is Direct X10.  I have been kinda looking at the 4850 and 4870 stuff and also the GTX 260, 280/5 and the 295 but they look as if they are all PCI-E 2.0 X16,   I don't think that my motherboard is compatible with these GPU's I think my board is just PCI-E X16 not the newer 2.0

I'm really just looking to upgrade enough to play the Direct X10 games which seems some games are saying minimum requirements are dual core CPU and Direct X10? which means Vista.
I oops on the mother board model on my original post will edit to correct..

so Vista 64 ok got it.
Thanks

NP, you know that nvidia is gonna have directx 11 cards out before the end of the year right?

all pci-2.0 cards are backward compatible with pci-e x16, so they will fit and run on your system, however you will not be able to see their true potential if you don't have pci-d 2.0.

now the 4850 is pci-e x16 and directx 10 support and your psu hopefully can run it, cause a 550 should be enough

Do you think I would be money ahead to just gut my towers MB and CPU,GPU, and Ram and upgrade my setup to the more current PCI-E 2.0 X16 motherboards? that I7 920 or the new AMD Phenom 2 940 both look good as far as price.
My CPU is plenty fast I think I play a bit of BF2 and Im usually one of the first ones in the game if not the first even still .....so Im happy with the performance its just that its just about as old as the t-rex now in the tech age.  Too bad this stuff dont last longer my pc works great just not keeping up with the games.
TIA

If your current CPU is giving you what you need, then just upgrade the GPU.

if you gonna upgrade go with an i7, budget wise the 920 is a great CPU.

I know my CPU is giving me what I need now..... BUT, I have my reservations as to if it will work for some of the new games?  I haven't personally seen it but my brother says that some of the games we have been talking about playing say minimum requirements are a dual core CPU.  What I'm finding in used or new old stock is not as cheap to be had in a socket 939 as I thought or think it should be.  I mean its a old socket!  seems like people that are selling them think there gold which is why I was asking if I would be money ahead to junk what I have and replace with current CPUs to be had.
Any way I really appreciate the replies so far!!
I'm getting closer to thinking my budget expectations are way unreasonableYing%20Yang

Well, Before i upgraded like 4 days ago i came from an AMD 6000+ processor, it was badass fastest processor ever for 70 bucks...
Its socket AM2 though, with the processor being so cheap i dont see how you couldnt buy like 2-4 gigs of ddr2 memory and a new mobo all 3 of them pieces for less than 180 and with a card which plays all the games out todate... get a cheaper 4870.

You could buy all this for like 350
Intel I7 940 @ 4.0
Asus P6T X58 Mobo
12GB OCZ Flex DDR3 2000mhz
3x EVGA SSC edition GTX285
Thermaltake Spedo Advance
2x GSkill 128gb SSD Hardrives and a 1TB Western digital
Power+Cooling 1200W PSU

Oops Missed your post!

what is the DirectX 11 gonna change should I wait?  I don't suppose you know if it is still gonna be a PCI-E 2.0 X16 or are they gonna have a new protocol for the slot or a new slot all together?
Thanks

yes new cards will be pci-e 2.0 unless they come out with 3.0 but I'm sure it will be backward compatible.

some games might use dx11, but I doubt there will be many in the next year or so.

Thanks DST4ME

think I will check out the GTX280's would like to have a GTX 295 but I'm just not gonna spend 5 to 600.00  again.  I really like my EVGA 7950GX2 it runs every thing on high but its not DirectX 10 compliant
or at least I don't think it is?
maybe I will install Vista before I install the new video card and see what happens?
thanks

if I'm not mistaken dx10 needs shager model 4.0 and your card has model 3.0 so I'm gonna say no it not dx10 compatible, its dx 9 only.

dont' go with 280, either go with 295 gtx or go with 260+

Why do I want to stay away from the GTX280's???   Isnt the 280 a step up from the 260?
Thanks

cause the difference between 280 and 260+ oced is like 10fps and not worth the extra cost.

if you want a real step up from a 206+ then go with 285 or 295

do you relaly have to spend right now? seems like a better idea to me just to wait and save the dough, than spend right now and have to upgrade later
