hey all,
a question for the experts. i am upgrading the ram in my computer. currently i have 3 x 1gb ddr3 1333mhz corsair dominators at 1.5V, timings 9-9-9-24. i recently purchased 3 x 2gb ddr3 1600mhz corsair dominators at 1.65V, timings 8-8-8-24. how should i install the new ram? can i just plug and play or should i underclock/overclock my ram to match timings and volts? thanks for the help |

i believe when you install the new ram it will be auto detected with no overclock setting applied to it, except probably the speed ratio, so power off, install it, enter your bios when you start up, volt it properly per its voltage rating (NO AUTO)

Can I easily and safely overclock my older 1333mhz ram to match the settings on the new 1600mhz ram? Is there any real benefit in overclocking my ram further? Thanks. I'm a noob to overclocking.

if you don`t know what you are doing overclocking can cause a lot of problems but yes you can overclock your old ram but how far you are able to clock it depends entirely on your system, some may get a high clock stable some may not
before you start to play with the settings be sure you know how to get it back to the original profile in bios if your overclock gets no were i have not seen much benefit of clocking your ram alone, most clock their CPU then adjust the ram to it if you are going for a overlcock write down the settings you have tried that way you keep track of what you have tried edit; wait for some one with more hands on experience on overlocking to come back to you before you start to head off in the world of the bios Edited by Beezie - 29 Aug 2010 at 11:16am |

I think keeping the 3 gigs you have at lower ratings will really complicate things and hold back your overclock a lot. And for most people 6 gigs is plenty. Once you know your new ram is OK just sell, store or use elsewhere the old 3 gigs.
If I were I'd save your current bios profile. Then Set bios to defaults. Then shut down. Then remove old ram. Then Install new ram. Then go into bios and load the timings, voltage and command rate your ram is rated for (and remain at defaults for everything else i.e stock processor speeds). You can put your fsb:dram ratio at 2:8, 2:10, or 2:12 Then go into windows and post back here and i'm sure people will help out (getting you to a higher overclock). If you have an EVGA board could go to EVGA fourums (if everyone here is busy) for help and cold always call DS. When you come back here be ready to post a bios template. *also, writing down your current settings is a good idea. Edited by AndydViking - 29 Aug 2010 at 11:57am |

you can use all of it, but you will have to take the lowest common denominator for both sticks' speed, voltage, timings, so it just depends on what you can get out of the lowest ram if you want to use both of them together
edit make sure when you install it that you pay attention to the slots, all the old ram goes in the slots with the matching colors, so they will end up alternating Edited by !ender_ - 29 Aug 2010 at 12:02pm |

I'm not sure but I'd think just the spec'd voltage difference between those two kits would be enough to scrap the idea of keeping those 3 gigs in. That's if you wanna overclock and run that ram well over 1333 (like !sender said you'll be running at lowest of the 2 kits).

alright,
so is the consensus that i should try to overclock my slower ram to see if it works properly or should i just attempt to fleabay the slower ram and stick with 6gb total. i'd like to keep all 9gb if that would improve my system. also, my current setup is an i7 920 overclocked to 3.3ghz with a evga x58 mb if that matters. |
