If I go with 3 5870's, will a 1000w corsair be enough?

it will be pushing, but yes.
5870 190watts x 3 = 570
cpu 150 watts
fans/hdds lights ect 50 watts
so draw of around 800, unless you overclock the 5870's then around 900.. ideal is 60%-70% max draw of the rated PSU.

Do we really need to have some of the things we get in our pc's Ouch? Just wanted to make sure it has enough power so if I  ever get the third card, I can run that 30" monitor maxed out with everything turn up high . And i'm talking everything on high. A big thank you very much to both of you Justin/DST. Maybe DSO should send you guys some free stuff Star for all the help you give people like myself.

Our pleasure just so you know, short of crysis you should be able to run most games at highest settings and 4x or 8x aa with 2 x 5870 at 2560 x 1600

I know with mass effect2 I turned everything up and was only getting 30FPS or so also ran the heaven demo and got 39 FPS for a average and that was with 2xAA on. But the problem might be with those bent PCIe slots that don't make full contact with the two cards???? We shall see in a few weeks when I get it back from the shop if that makes it better or not.

30 FPS would need around 1.7Ghz CPU so shouldn't be the CPU, but  stranger things have happened

Got the i7 920 oc @3.8 6gb ram. I'm thinking its the bent pcie slots that dont make full contact with the cards.
