Upgrading for Batman Arkham Origins

My specs (I bought this PC from DS in January 2013):

Marauder Level 1:

AMD Piledriver FX-4300 Vishera 3.8GHz 4 Core
ASUS M5A97
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz
600W Corsair GS
500GB 7200 RPM HD
AMD Radeon HD 7750 1GB

The recommended specs for the game:

  • OS:64-bit: Vista, Win 7, Win 8 
  • Processor:Intel Core i5-750, 2.67 GHz / AMD Phenom II X4 965, 3.4 GHz 
  • Memory:4 GB RAM 
  • Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 / AMD Radeon HD 6950 
  • DirectX®:11


If I buy a GTX 660 or higher I get the game for free. I am wondering what you think I should do. Note: I have never upgraded anything in a computer before.

Hi panda..... Welcome to the forums.    The gtx 660 will be a huge upgrade from your hd 7750... almost double the frame rate for alot of games.   Its also much better than the gtx 560 the specs you posted recommend.    

The card should come with a adapter power cable.    The gtx 660 needs a 6 pin power cable from your power supply.     You'll have to poke through the psu harness for a 6 pin connector or 2x 4 pin connectors to match the adapter.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Do you think it will increase the noise of my PC? I am worried it will be a big increase in noise.

Is everything else okay? Do you think I will be ok with my current CPU? How does it compare to the CPU in the recommended specs for the Batman game?

One additional thing. Can you look at this picture of HWMonitor. Do these temperatures look okay? I played a game for about 2 hours with it running in the background.

Your cpu exceeds the i5-750 cpu on the specs.    

The noise level and added heat might be a bit more.    One site shows the 7750 at 41dba sound under load and the 660 at 48dba.      Can't say for sure.
The added heat shouldn't be an issue if tge fans are working correctly.


The temps in HWMonitor are very good.     Plenty of headroom before any issues.

Cool. Do you have any recommendation for which GTX 660 I should get? I'm looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121656

Not sure which one is best for me... the cheaper one or the expensive one, or perhaps even a different one.

I personally would get a EVGA for their excellant support and stick with a reference card, non overclocked and with single fan.   Kinda like this...

Overclocking that card gives little gain but more stress and the double fan type might be a bit quieter and look nice but dump most of the heat into the case instead of out the back and out of the case.   Asus, etc are very good cards and if your pc case has good airflow then any of them work but sometimes the simple reference cards work just as good without added potential problems.

Just me.

For the future: I noticed that some cards have higher core clock, like this one:

This has 1033MHz core clock. Does that mean it is overclocked out of the box?

Yep, it's oc'd from the factory.  980mhz is the standard reference clock.   The oc'd cards are warrantied from the manufacturer since they did it, so really up to you what you get.

Just to spend some more of your money Hahaha , for another $50 or so , you could get the gtx 760.  About 20% better fps over the 660 , a newer card and would give added longevity.  Your power supply does have 2x 6 pin power connectors for the 660 or 760, if I read it right. 
 
Here's a link to compare the cards.    You can change the cards to compare, like 7750 to 660, etc.
 
 
But, the gtx 660 will play real nice with most games on a 1920x1080 monitor or less.  Batman will be no problem.

I actually got the MSI GTX 760 because I was worried about noise, and I am happy with the decision. Installation was easy and it is silent, just like my HD 7750. I played Bioshock Infinite for about 30 minutes on highest possible settings at 1080p, and it played smooth for most of it.

Max CPU temp: 57c
Max GPU temp: 68c

I didn't use the CD that came with the graphics card. I am assuming that that CD contains the software MSI provides for overlocking, bundled with the driver? I just went to the Nvidia website and got the latest stable drivers (version 327.23). Should I have used the CD instead? I don't really plan on overclocking.

I am happy with the purchase. Thank you for the help Big%20Smile

Congrats on the 760.. Awesome card.   You were right getting the latest from Nvidia website.   The CD usually has good but not the latest drivers.

I am getting occasional low FPS in Batman Arkham Origins (20 fps). I had the same problem in Bioshock Infinite. It happens often enough for it to be annoying. Most times it is around 60 fps but when things get really graphically challenging like smoke is when it goes down. I think it might be my CPU bottlenecking my performance (AMD FX 4300). What do you think?

I can't say for sure, but I don't think the FX  4300 is the issue.  Check your in-game graphic settings.  Turning down the settings like msaa or txaa from 8x to 2x or not at all, turn off shadows, reduce depth of field, etc can make a huge difference.  I don't have that game, so not sure what settings you do have, but even video cards a lot more powerful than yours can drop in fps with higher settings.
I would go to the game's forums and see what others are saying.  I did it briefly and saw a lot of posts of similar issues.

Yes I did some tests and found that my CPU is only going to like 80% and my GPU is at 99% so I think everything is working as it should Big%20Smile

I agree.    Even the most expensive cards can faulter when all the eye-candy is turned on. The 4300 might be a generation older but still a decent chip. .
