Well I'm finally upgrading the Hardware on my PC, and i just need some incite on what to get. To start off ill put down what my current PC specs are:
Intel 3.0 DUAL CORE processing (Front CACHE 833) nVidia 8500 GT 256 MB DDR2 (The thing is i cant update the drivers... tried everything) 2 gigs of DDR Ram Dual Hard drives (Hitachi 300) and a SATA (250) RPM is 7200 Powersupply is just a 550 WATT. Motherboard is from MSI (just w.e cant tell tell which one it is, because I don't where the box is Well I have a $1000 budget, So the only thing I'm keeping from this is my TOWER and MY hard drives. So now I need your guys advice on what to get thanks. I might put in a little more into my budget but don't overkill. But all the same try to keep it around a 1000 please - Thanks |

Another reason why I cant understand is that i get FPS drops in Counter-STRIKE 1.6 in smokes which shouldn't make any sense i should be get 100 FPS constant, for a 9 year old game. Another game which I don't quite understand the constant 30-50 FRAMES is source 8500 GT 256 MB, even if i cant update the DRIVERS i should be getting a 100.
-So you can see my frustration, and i just want to keep up with Current specs as much as possible |

A Videocard upgrade is probably all you need for major speed increase. I don't see any reason to toss the other components if everything is working well. An Nvidia 260GTX will liven that system up pretty well and should be fine with 550w. Another good choice would be an ATI 4870. Either would be about $300.
You may need to reload Windows if you can't get the driver issue worked out. Kelly posted a nice guide on updating videocard drivers here:
Other comments:
1) You can find out your motherboard model by looking for the model# on the board itself and looking it up on MSI's website.
2) A 3.0 Dual Core should be plenty for just about everything and overclocks really well (I am assuming it is an E8400 Core Duo and not an old P4 with HT).
3) An upgrade to 4GB RAM would be a noticable improvement and would be cheap, but not as big a difference as the videocard.
4) Your chip should overclock up to 3.6 or higher pretty easily and would be a nice performance increase for little cost.
Good luck!

If you have the E8400 or E6850 3.0Ghz Core 2 already, you won't notice much if any improvement moving to a faster chip, so I would recommend just sticking with the CPU and motherboard you have.
The fastest non-extreme chips are the E8600 Dual Core at 3.33 and the Q9650 quad at 3.0. Most games don't use the quad core, so you are looking at a 10% improvement at best over your current chip.
It's your videocard that is holding back your performance, so that is where I would put my money fist.

Pretty sure he has a sh*tty Pentium.
A E8600 or Q9550 a long with a P45 can be had for ~$450. As for your FPS issue, what resolution are you running at? The 8500GT is a sh*tty card and if you're running above 1280x1024, that would explain a lot... As for 1.6, it's a software / setting issue that you have to figure out. It could be a number of things. |

Well depending on which CPU you have, a Videocard upgrade would help a ton. GTX260 or ATI 4870 you will see the biggest difference. If your budget is $1000, like SkyR said you can get a E8600 or Q9550 a long with a P45....
So:
E8600 or Q9550 + P45= $450
GTX260 or ATI 4870= $250(with MIR)
That's only $700.....I would spend the extra $300 on some more memory and go for 4GB....then you will be set for quite awhile.
With a ATI 4870 I'm getting a constant 300FPS in CS:Source.....not sure about the GTX260 but I know they are very close in performance.

the 8500GT isnt a gaming card its more for videos.
if you want like 100-200 fps in css and 100 or more in cs:1.6 i recomend getting the the nvidia 8800GTX i would also recomend upgrading your PSU to a 750 watt. |

8800GTX is a terrible card to buy now. I don't know why some of you still recommend it.
You want a HD4870 or GTX 260 for your budget. |
