Hi everyone,

I bought my DS PC early last year with 4gb of ddr2 pc-8500 (1ghz) ram, and I'm looking to upgrade it to at least 6gb.  What do I need to know when buying memory?  Is it as simple as buying 2 more 2gb sticks of pc8500 mem? (I have 4 slots filled with 1gb sticks so I would have to get 2 to upgrade to 6).  Is there anything I need to do with my pc other than pop out 2 of the 1gb sticks and pop in the 2 new 2gb sticks?  I am comfortable switching out the memory myself I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else I had to do.

Different sizes of ram

07-03-2009 11:14 PM

Hi

Can anyone tell me if it possible to fit two different sizes of ram in the same computer IE: a 1 GB and a 2Gb one or in any combination, or must they be the same size.

I am just wondering

THE ANSWER IS: IT DEPENDS!!! Some computers require that memory be installed in matched pairs, other computers use dual channel memory and offer the best performance if the memory is perfectly matched, usually called a "kit". Generally the answer is yes you can mix different sizes of memory (256, 512, 1 gig 2 gig) with each other but you have to do some checking before you can assume the general rule applies for your computer.

I installed different size DDR2 in an HP desktop, and though it's been a while, I seem to remember they suggested installing the memory in a certain order or in certain slots. You may have better luck researching on one of the memory retailer websites; they contain a vast amount of info ANd have forums dedicated to memory discussion only. Hope this helps.......JPT
