Getting my new system Tuesday and it has a 1000w power supply.  If shutdowns are possible should I UPS or just connect into a quality surge protector?  I'd think I could damage the power supply if losing power is frequent but if there is no danger of damage then saving the cost of a decent UPS is appealing too.  It's not the end to occasionally have to restart a game or app.

The circuit that the PC is plugged into has a lower amp rating than I'd like and the air conditioner taxes it occasionally.  This won't be long-term as I'll be moving next spring.  Thoughts?

If the AC is already taxing the circuit, I wouldn't use it for my pc at all. Do anything to avoid it since the brownouts can kill electronics very easily. An UPS will help, but it may not be enough. I use a dedicated outlet for my pc. Only my pc and monitor are on this circuit, via UPS and line conditioner.

P.S. I've spent several years reviewing home audio equipment this way and even then have had gear get fried during t-storms. Working under deadlines during stormy season sux! LOL!

Widdlecat,

Supercool!  I'm an audio dork of sorts-mostly mid-fi gear as the budget allows.  Sometime I'm sure my NHT 5.1 system will need to be replaced by Anthony Gallo Reference 3.1s and I may need to rectify the rational that downsized me from an Arcam to an Onkyo receiver.  I recently, for no reason to speak of at all, spent a bunch of money discovering headphones: AKG K701, K271 Studio, Koss Porta Pros and Sennheiser HD 600s as well as a Glow tube amplifier.  Smile

What do you think about using an online UPS?  That should always offer a continuous AC output shouldn't it?  I don't really have  a lot of choice in where the PC goes until we get moved.  I've had a PC in the spot previously but not so robust a machine and the air conditioner should be getting put away soon.

Thoughts?  Thumbs%20Up  Thumbs%20Down

APC BR1500LCD is the best PSU ever built.

Be warned that BX series in HM's link is inferior to BR series (Not sure how exactly, but that's what I've heard). So if you were to buy this model, I would suggest you buy it at one of e-tailers after doing the following price comparison:

I just bought that for my computer, which hopfully comes home soon with a 1200w powersupply.  Kind of a bummer to spend 200 on something of this nature, but I would hate to see my computer die right after having it returned.

Yeah, I noticed that after purchasing...

im not all that concerned with spikes. I'm more concerned with brownouts, esp since I live in an old building.  plus, newegg didn't carry the other model and I hate bestbuy... haha
