    Posted: 28 Mar 2008 at 10:28am

A few weeks ago I made about 6 posts back and forth and got a ton of help on my build.

I want to drop the price down $900 more due to budget restriction that I didn't previously have.

So... my question is... (keeping LONGEVITY in mind)

Is downgrading from the

Intel Core 2 Quad QX9650 Extreme 3.00GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache).....

to the

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHZ (1333 Mhz Front Side Bus) (6MB Cache)

going to be a devastating blow that will reduce the maximum life of my gaming PC by more than a year?.. or will it last me relatively as long?
(pushing for 5 year system here), even if it's playing on the low end of things on the 5th year????

No need to give me the speech about "good luck with 5 years" ... I'm aware of that... I just need to know if the difference is too much.

Thanks.

Personally from what I have heard, Yes, it will last. From my experience reading on forums the E8400 is the best dual core CPU out so far (besides the the E8500, a .16 GHz difference, comparing the price, not worth it.) Since the QX9650 is a quad core processor it will be better with programs that support quad CPU's I.E. Photoshop, Supreme Commander (thats not all).
I may not have really answered your question in the sentances about so let me put it like this, It's not going to make a devastating blow, and I
believe it will last 5+ years.

Note: I was running on an old P4 3.06 GHz for probably over 5 until I put in a P4 3.0 GHz  (the 3.0 was better, higher FSB and more Cache)

There's my 2 cents worth.

Edit: Yea, that looks like it will last.

i think that the 2.4 ghz quad core would do just fine. With the money saved there, you could put more of your money into graphics, which is what you want to do if your going to be using it for gaming

What Thx said would also work if you wanted to stay with a quad core CPU. Now that I think of it I believe the 9800Gx2 is supposed to be 2 8800 GTS's combined so you could get 1 9800 over 2 8800s and save some money there

Thanks, I was really concerned about downgrading the processor.

I'll be upgrading Graphic Cards once or twice throughout the way... same with memory. So it's okay if I don't have those perfect... I'll look into 1 card over 2 though.
