On Friday I ordered a PC with an 80 GB SSD as the OS drive and a 1TB drive as the hard drive 2. It seems preferable to put the User Profiles on the spinning hard drive rather than the OS SSD. Here is a link to how that can be done after the OS is installed. OS Installed
I'm not sure the technique referenced on the linked website is something I'd really like to do. Here is another approved way. MSApproved Here is a link to way to do it on OS Installation. This one seems preferable to me. OnOSInstall Is it better to change the User Profiles(s) to the spinning media? Which method is better? Assuming on OS Installation is better should I request DS to install it that way? Where should the Virtual Memory go? Any opinions? |

I would not, you should not be hurting for room on the SSD that badly, and the User folder should not get too big.
If you kept all games/movies/music/media on the HDD you would likely never even run out of room on the 80GB SSD, most applications just don't take much room at all. Storing a lot of games on the SSD is what will take up your space quick, so try to keep your installed game library trimmed. |

There is no good reason to keep user profiles and personal files on the SSD, its a safe simple use of a common function of file systems called symbolic linking or SymLink that you use to redirect the files off the SSD to the HDD and really with smallish SSD's should be the Norm. There is nothing dangerous nor difficult about Symbolic Links and theres no stability or safety issues involved.
In my work and private environments Symbolic Links are common every day items. Many Games tend to put save files and other things into your User profile directories, these files in some games can be HUGE especially save games and screen caps. Best to move that off the SSD. Except that the SSD can access it all around 100 times faster, which is the whole point.
If someone is hurting for room badly enough, by all means, but it should be a last drastic step. |

I think we just disagree on the "Degree" here, it isn't much of a drastic step to use a perfectly sound and fully supported function of the operating system

I'm not saying it's dangerous or anything, just that most of the stuff in the User folder are perfect candidates for keeping on a SSD. They can be important for loading things quickly, tens of thousands of small files, don't take up much room, etc. I have around 25 games currently installed, most of which with many saves (I'm a save fiend), plus I still have saves there from another 5 games or so which I no longer even have installed, yet my User folder is only 970MB. And 600MB of that is junk I have sitting around on my desktop (which is stored in the User folder). If you're really worried about freeing up space that badly you could just reduce the size of the page file (mine is 6GB) or something, the User folder is just not something to fret over. |

Well with an 80GB SSD, I don't expect I'll have a problem with the space without moving the user profile to my secondary drive at least not for some time to come.

you should treat it like exactly what it is, expensive real estate... dont put anything on it that isnt going to gain from the faster read/write... aka anything that isnt an application

It sucks that most games don't allow you to install the applications on a separate drive from the other game files.
