Well, after a little over a week of waiting on FedEx, my Vanquish L4 SE is now home and allowing me to make this post...I literally turned it on 5 minutes ago.
So far, everything seems to be in order. The one hiccup was a loose jumper rattling around in the case...it looks like it was the one used for clearing the CMOS, according to the manual. I popped that back on to the proper pins. I also installed an extra SSD for my FSX install; however, there are no spare SATA cables in the system, so I'll probably be stealing the one off the HDD until I pick up another one, lol. I'll post up some pics later...I think my dog is starving by now. ;) Edited by Burnspot - 06 Sep 2013 at 7:42am |

The lack of an extra SATA cable isn't that big of a deal as I'm cannibalizing one from a dead Dell here in the office (mobo dead in it) today.
Got all of the Windows updates installed last night and started the process of putting MS Flight Simulator X on the machine to the point where I could start to do some basic optimizations and setup. I can't do serious scenery stuff until I get the HDD back online this evening, but I did get a chance to briefly test out the installation with the brand new PMDG 777....it was BUTTER SMOOTH and looked fantastic. That new triple 7 is awesome by the way... I'll get my DCS stuff and other games loaded over the weekend; those should be no sweat for this system. On with the unboxing pics... Big box. Still strapped up, but all of the security tape was rolled off and clinging to the bottom of the box...I suspect it was slid around more than carried throughout its journey. Suspending plastic was still intact, system floating nicely in box. Foam in place. Sitting on the table. I heard something rattling around inside when I picked it up out of the shipping box. The guts...clean. The source of the rattling...a jumper. I consulted the mobo manual and determined that this had to be the CLRTC jumper. Re-installed it in its default position. Looks like I got the Asus version of the 770, nice! After seeing this photo this morning, I see it looks like I perhaps missed removing the plastic film over the cooler? I have a rolling computer desk with two low-hanging shelves on each side...one's for the box...here it sits glowing. PLENTY of air clearance. The rolling desk is setup so the only "hanging" cord I have is the plug for the UPS...makes moving the whole rig around the house pretty easy, especially with the wood floors throughout the house. Initial bootup. Looking forward to Windows 8.1 so this one annoyance can go away. Windows 8 is fantastic once you get over fretting about the Metro front door. The speaker you see in this pic is part of an Altec Lansing system I've had since around 2000, they're rock solid and sound incredible. Can't bring myself to replace them, lol. The sad thing is the new start menu 8.1 is enabling just brings you to that metro ui I think.
I hate to say it but if you hate windows 8 ui you might want to look at third party addons to get rid of the ui. I am hoping windows 9 allows us to decide on a start menu or not so we can select it based on how we like our interface to look and work. Congrats on the new system!! Well, luckily, I've gotten used to it since it launched...I never spend more than a couple seconds on that opening screen anyway. It'll be setup to use no Metro apps of course. I like how Win 8 performs though, it provided a nice performance boost from Win 7 on my old machine, which in turn, was a huge boost over the Vista that old system originally had on it, lol. |

Well, I've had my system for a few days now and everything has gone swimmingly thusfar. I cannibalized a SATA cable from a dead Dell here in the office and hooked up the 1TB drive again, allowing me to begin the laborious process of re-installing all of my FSX addons and some general programs (I don't want anything going on the OS SSD or FSX SSD if I can help it). Last night, I finally completed the bulk of FSX-related re-installations although I've already been flying on the rig for a couple days now.
Performance has been outstanding! In FSX, I have just about everything maxed out or close to it and, so far, have seen nothing but smooth operation (not an FPS junky, just want smooth, stutter-free ops). I'm going to invest in some payware airports and see how that goes...up to now, I've just used freeware AFCADS because my old system couldn't handle the payware. In terms of tweaks done to FSX, I just use the HIMEM fix and then follow Nick's guide (Simforums.com) for the Nvidia Inspector app...nothing else. Though I might get sucked into the Air Hauler world this weekend with PMDG's new 777, I want to get my copy of DCS World and A-10 installed and see how that goes. The ASUS monitor came with a coupon for a free DCS module, so maybe I'll pick up the Black Shark or Mi-8 too. At some point, I'll get an FPS installed maybe, lol. A few more pics... In the new PMDG 777-200F, climbing out of Los Angeles (KLAX); beautiful aircraft! FSGenesis, GEX, UTX, and OpusFSX in use, with UT2 driving AI traffic. Doesn't get much better than this. Heading towards KGJT out of the LA basin. It's not much, but it does the job, lol. The Dell is my old FSX machine that the Vanquish replaced. It's become my EFB, Air Hauler, and flight planning machine, linked via WideFS and the net, relieving my good ole Mac of that task. |

After seeing those pics, you've piqued my interest into getting back into flight sims. My HOTAS Cougar setup with TrackIR and DCS A10, Falcon BMS ,etc have been collecting dust lately.
Enjoy. |

Lol, my long-running Air Hauler company uses the FedEx livery for everything in its fleet...Twin Otters, a few MD-11's, 737's 747's and now the PMDG 777. Happy coincidence, heh.
Can't stop flying the new 777...such a beautiful machine in FSX. Only one system crash with FSX since last week (thanks to UT2 doing something bad once). No stutters or lag...this new system has positively changed my FSX experience to be sure. I got DCS World and the A-10 reinstalled over the weekend and it looks and runs gorgeously. Just have to solve a little problem with the throttle's thumb slider acting as the throttle, lol. I only recently got the TrackIR stuff and it was the first time I've used it with DCS...WOW....game changer! I have Falcon BMS as well, but haven't reinstalled it yet. I suspect it'll look and fly great. On the FPS/RPG front, I moved my Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 as well as Skyrim installations to the Vanquish (Steam/Origin...easy peasy). All work smoothly at full detail. Guess I'm set. |

Once you go TrackIR, you'll never go back. Can't fly without it.
I did try TrackIR with shooters, but didn't like it. The mouse/keyboard , for me, is so much better. Have Fun. |

Wouldn't that plastic on the H60 gotten hot and possibly melted with 72 hours of stress testing?

All Vanquishes are prebuilt and stressed test ahead of time so if the plastic had gotten hot and melted when DS was stress testing it, then they would have done something different. |
