Budget:
$3,000 - $3,500

Expectations:
Want this as primary gaming computer for 4-5 years. Plan on buying an Acer Predator 1440P monitor.

Concerned about cooling, noise reduction is nice but not necessary. Wasn't sure about what case was better Velox or Apollo

Usage:
Gaming (Fallout, Call of Duty, Company Of Heroes 2, Endless Legend, Stellaris, Crusader Kings II) and general computing (web, photo storage, MS Office)

Special Needs:
Will be using secondary drive for data storage. Plan on backing up to external HD periodically and storing off site. Want fairly fast backup so thinking USB 3.0.

What is the difference between the ASUS Z170-PRO GAMING and the ASUS MAXIMUS VIII HERO motherboards?

Thought Velox would help cool better because I wasn't planning on water cooling the graphics card. But am overclocking to Stage 1 on the CPU and chose HydroLux Lite since Noctua isn't an option. Should I add additional fans or is this config good enough?

The Pro Gaming mobo is all you might need, unless you want the added looks of the Hero board or the ability to tweak the overclock yourself. The Hero allows the use of the KeyBot for custom keyboard features and I believe it allows the use of an Overclock Panel for easier overclocking.   The Hero also has the seperate buttons like Start, Reset, etc for on the board control. If you don't want to mess with overclocking then this would all be useless to you. I believe the Hero has better audio but I've never compared them.

Either case will work.   The Velox is a custom, in house all metal case and different from anywhere else and the cooling somewhat better, but the Apollo for your build is fine. Sometimes it's all about aesthetics.   Keep in mind, the Apollo has a left facing window and the Velox a right facing window with inverted motherboard. Your desk setup might sway you one way or the other.

In your build, change the power supply to the other 750watt psu for $34.   Gold vs Bronze efficiency and double the warranty. Plus, semi vs full modular wiring, if it's still the G1or2.
