Hey guys, im looking at some laptops for a family member, he will be using it for gaming. I was wondering what vid card will give better preformance between the following :

17.3" FHD LED Glossy
1920x1080
1024MB DDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870

Or

17"WUXGA Glossy
1920x1200
2048MB DDR5 Nvidia GTX 480M

I know the res' are different, but just curious as to which will preform better between the two res'

Any input is appreciated :)

Well from what I been reading the 480 definitely seems to be an improvement over the the 5870.

I don't know much about laptops, but people on those forums seem to be baffled that this is going to be a 100w card in a laptop. I'm guessing battery life and heat are going to be a serious factor for this card.

for a laptop heat is a really big issue and the 480's run hot. no matter what i've seen i have never seen a laptop with good ventilation. even the pads you buy don't do much. the fan platforms are not much of a improvement, i find they cool my lap better then the laptop.

ATI cards are nice and cool the ATI card would be the wiser choice see if u can get it with #2's screen. the 5870 isn't as powerful but you still have dx11. IMO for a laptop i would get ATI over Nvidia pretty much anyday with the current selection.

I figured the heat would be the main problem here, I know what you mean when you say the cooling pads cool your lap more too rofl, Think i'll get him to look at the 5870 :)
