I was wondering if you could upgrade an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB in a laptop. I am about to get a laptop and I have read that the video cards are very important and so I want to know if when you get a laptop in like a year or two if you could upgrade to something more powerful. Thanks in advance!

can't?! Theres no can't in IT
fact is you can but it not many that you can.
If you can find a MXM compatiable Laptop sometimes they can be upgraded.
Also I have upgraded the graphics on Dell M90's at work. Dell's you can only upgrade with Dell stuff but you still can on some models. Mainly non Home models Enterprise class laptops, and such.
the Asus XG Station - not sure if it out yet.
But most 98% of models you can not upgrade.

I'm sorry but I'm not buying anything off of ebay, thats bs, its a crapshoot.
and those are for dell, show me where I can get a 260M or a 280M from a creditable site, also this user has a 9800m GT 512MB already, he is not looking to upgrade a 9800m to a 9800m. I already know and have changed parts in laptops , its not a matter of knowing, its a matter of part. last one I worked on was my own dell inspiron 1720, in which I dropped in an x9000. its not about you
its about the OP
the answer is yes you can upgrade a laptop's graphics but they are very few you can.
If he wishes to tell us more about what make and model he is looking to get then we can tell him if it can or can't in more detail. Maybe the OP is right in a year or two their could be a laptop that can be upgraded in this fashion or a product like the XG.
bye bye

you can't upgrade a laptop GPU, so far you have shown us parts to replace a 9800m not upgrade it, to upgrade a laptop GPU you need the GPU itself right? so first lets find a 260m or 280m then second we will worry about compatibility, I normally worry about compatibility first but in this case if the part is not going to be available, who cares about compatibility.
The op is saying he want to get a laptop that has a 9800m and wants to know if he can upgrade the 9800m. now do you know the specifications of the 9800m and a 260m or a 280m? Edited by DST4ME - 17 Jul 2009 at 10:44pm |

You can upgrade them but there is no general consumer price available. We used to buy in bulk at a company I worked for and the individual price was more than you would want to pay for laptop hardware. EDIT: This was back in 05 so I don't know if it has changed since I havent really needed to upgrade a single laptop component since then. Edited by aaronevil - 20 Jul 2009 at 9:13am |

Ok yes dealers maybe able to but I'm talking about the avarage user, and you are correct the prices would be an arm an a leg.
I think a 280m goes for 600 to $800 Edited by DST4ME - 20 Jul 2009 at 9:55am |
