Looking to upgrade my cards from 2 GTS 250 OC 1gb running SLI to one GTX 285 or 295 or maybe 2 (SLI) if i can find the great deal, as I cant really afford the GTX 480 or 470
My question is how much performance increase will I have and is it worth the money to upgrade now? or is what i have ok for now and wait until I have the money to go for the GTX 480

when i looked up the prices i got:
 
gtx 285 = $259
gtx 295 = $400 or more
 
470 = $300 with a free game
480 = $440
 
either way, the prices wouldnt matter, hold out for fermi, dont spend several hundred on outdated hardware

Here is my $.02
If at all posible wait, the 6XXX series from AMD will launch next week, and it has the GTX 460 in its sights. Reason, the GTX 460 is the card to have right now, for main stream gamers. This should force Nvidia to lower prices on the  450-GTX 470. Plus Holidays are right around the corner, and there will be some good deals to boot.
 
The GTX 285 is still $250.00 and the GTX 480 has the performance of 2 GTX 285's, plus DX10.1 and Dx 11 support.  The GTX 470 overclocks like mad, and will match a stock GTX 480 when decently overclocked.  The GTX 470 can be had for low $300's, so that would be the smart money, might be $275.00 for for Holidays, or to compete with AMD's new  cards.
 
You have the foundation of a really good rig, once you get a GTX 470, or 2, lol, in there you should be set for a while.

 When you say mad overclocking, you mean using the furmark or Afterburn Right? aor do you mean doing the advance stuff like soldering and wiring?

msi afterburner for overclocking
furmark for temp and stability testing
 
there are more extreme ways to do it, but you 1 dont really need to and 2 can easily toggle your overclock settings on and off with afterburner, making it very easy to keep your system cool and quiet or jack up the power when you need it

no, that is nothing more than you paying someone else to overclock the card for you, which you can easily do for free
overclocking a video card (without volt modding) is far easier than cpu/ram overclocking

The GTX 470 has soft moddable voltage regulators, so you can up the voltage without soldering. The big boys are getting over 100% overclocks on them, and 40% overclocks for 24/7 gaming are realistic

Yeah definitely better to wait for the Holidays and prices will drop. No point in selling your self short and getting something that is outdated. The GTX 285/295 are great cards, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you purchased one.
 
The GTX 4XX series is Direct X 11 while the GTX 2XX isn't. Wait until the 6XXX series comes out and Nvidia is forced to lower their prices and make a decision from there. Either way, this holiday season has some good deals in store for consumers =)

It will depend on the card(s), but 850Mhz on the core is pretty common as the Max on air. When I first tried out my GTX 470, it was very hot out, so my test room was hot, and these cards love cold, so in a hot room this about all mine would do.
 
will do about 900Mhz in a cold room. Big%20Smile
 
around 825Mhz it will run pretty cool, and the fan is not super loud, above that, and mine get pretty hot, and loud.

 I know that some have a bit better cooling, which would be nice. One thing to watch out for, some non reference coolers do cool better than the standard design, and some cool worse.
I love the MSI afterburner program, and the only way to support that program is to get a MSI card, so that is what I did.
All reference cards will cool, and overclock the same, it comes down to price and waranty.
$250 GTX 470's should be no problem.

it is a good card, matters the price difference, 20$ is the most I would pay extra for it.

New Egg has it for $350 and the stock one for $299 so not worth the extra cash.
 
So with 2-GTS250 OC running SLI cards doesnt even come close in comparison to just one GTX470 with that said i'm in for some major performance in the graphics department
