I'm wondering if I need to get dual video cards on a new system that will have to perform well for me for at least 4 years.  I primarily game online and off.  Comments?

Yes, CrossfireX or SLI is recommended for playing the latest games at max settings on any resolution above 1680 x 1050.

If you're not sure, then just buy a machine that is SLI or CrossFire compatible, and only buy one video card right now. You can always add a 2nd card later if you determine that you need the additional speed.

The new Core i7 systems are compatible with both SLI and CrossFire, and thus would provide you with excellent future-proofness.

Imho it depends on youre budget...but to be able to make a system that will last you 4 years ...Its kind of hard becouse technology advancing faster and faster, but on the subject: an Intel i7 , SLI compat. mobo, a single gtx280 vid card and gddr3 memory would do perfectly for quiet a time. And if you starting to feel behind you can always 2 way SLI the 280s or even 3 way SLI them..make sure to get power supply that can support the high -end cards ;)

Honestly though, you can forgo SLI 280's and get a single 4870X2. It'll be a lot cheaper and offer competitive performance.

I just like to second that, if you want to be playing at high res and high settings, best bet is dual GPU
