Anyone know of any really good virus/spyware protection programs? Freeware/retail, idc, but I'm sick of mine. I use spysweeper and trend micro antivirus, and they're both pretty annoying. Just wondering what people used and what people would recommend.

I use spysweeper. It is the best on the market.
As far as trend micro, yeah... that app sucks. here's a good resource for security stuff: http://www.spywarekills.com |

combine the 4 and it is a pretty good combo.

that's the thing. you shouldn't have to combine them. The more apps you have running, the more your system is going to be bogged down. The new spysweeper comes with an antivirus now, and the only other thing a good system would need is a firewall.

And the more you have running, the more annoying update popups you get...so sick of those. Maybe I'll just go with spysweeper and windows firewall, and completely remove this Trend Micro thing.
Also can I get some more help with my build? I'm having some budget/hardware issues.

I only use Ad-Aware spy speeper and Avast AV software. I'm running XP and they work great. I used to use Nornton on my old system because that's what it came with and after I switched...Avast caught 2 viruses that Norton did not. I also use ZoneAlarm for a firewall on my old system. It does give you a lot of annoying pop-ups, but you only need to view them once and it's gone for good if you check the box.

I also use Spysweeper Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware, and Zonealarm. On past machines I've had Spysweeper catch a few things that other mainstream programs missed, and also ruled out a few false positives I was getting with SpywareDoctor. I definitely would recommend it for piece of mind.

I used to use Spysweeper...it does work well...almost no spyware...but it's a huge resource hog...totally slowed up my start-up.

Norton Utilities Anti-virus
Spybot search and destroy
Ad-Aware
I've tried Zonealarm but found it interferes with and crashes some of my games. I've tried spysweeper, don't like it.
Updating virus signatures and applications with Norton easiest I ever have, part of reason why I have it.
A sight to goto to check your internet security is:
www.grc.com (Gibson Research Corporation)
Also has alot of usefull info. Great sight. Run Shields Up! It will let you know if you have ports OPEN, CLOSED, or in STEALTH. Edited by cyberman - 05 Sep 2007 at 6:13pm |

Gee, I don't use any of this stuff except a SPI router with NAT. I've never gotten a virus or spyware. I guess my computer doesn't get out much.
