Hey Folks,

I've installed 4 or 5 games on my new Vista 64-bit system, and none of the games show up in my Start menu. Plus, only about half of the games put a shortcut on the desktop, even through the installer was told to put a shortcut there.

I have a feeling this is related to Vista putting 32-bit apps into their own Programs folder. The work-around is easy enough: I just find the application and make my own shortcuts. This sure seems like an idiotic bug on Microsoft's part though.

Does anyone else have this problem?

sounds more like the installers fault, the installer has a bug and was not configured correctly to navigate and place the shortcut where it needs to be.

If one game can install shortcut on desktop and another cannot then its not vista, if it was vista you would have that problem with all apps/games, if the problem is with only some apps/games then the installer of the app/game is the problem.

Yeah, this could be an installer problem. However, it seems to be a widespread problem. So far it's happened with Tomb Raider Underworld, World in Conflict, Red Alert 3, Half Life 2 EP2, and Crysis. If it's an installer problem, then these companies haven't done a decent QA job on Vista 64.

ofcourse not, xp has a different setup then vista which is why the installer works on xp but it has not been given the proper place to go to in vista, thus it works in xp and not vista.

if it was vista then you would not be able to make any shortcut on your vista desktop, the fact that some can and some can't tells you that its not vista its the installers.

there is also a matter of the installer setting proper permissions so it can install files/shortcuts.

If it was vista then you would have the problem with all apps/games.

Well, whoever's fault it is, it's quite embarrassing for Microsoft and the game companies. I mean I don't have any problem digging through the Programs folder and finding what I need, but novices won't have any idea what to do. It's hard to imagine that companies would see this problem, and make the decision to ship with it.

you got that right, cause its the simplest part of making an installer is to point the shortcuts, and when it fails, even if it was MS, its down right embarrassing

I dont bother with the vista start menu anyways, its a POS. Either make it use the classic version instead or use nothing but shortcuts for everything ha.

Guys, are you sure you're not talking about a "Games for Windows" issue.  By design the only shortcuts created by the install are listed in the Games Explorer (Start Menu/Games/Games Explorer).  That's a requirement of the "Games for Windows" certification.
