I encourage everyone to purchase x64 bit software. Lets get rid of 32bit already, its doing nothing but holding us back. The only problem you will have with x64 is with software and devices you shouldn't even be using anymore anyways. Get rid of that dot matrix printer sheesh.

As much as I like to do that, all softwares can't run on 64bit yet.

Yuo should have no problem.
YouTube works fine as long as you use the 32bit browser. It defaults to that by the way.

I agree with the 32 bit explorer, too many sites did not work well with the 64bit...
but now I use Firefox so I am still at 32 Edited by RickinVa - 17 Sep 2008 at 8:53pm |

Supposedly, the difference will eventually be in speed. But atm, the only difference is the fact that 64bit doesn't work half the time. That's exactly why the default IE in x86 and x64 Windows is the 32bit version.

I have been thinking about doing this for a long time and after doing my research, I think I am ready. But at the risk of asking some stupid questions...
I currently have Vista Home Premium 32-bit (installed by Digital Storm). I want to upgrade to Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
It seems like the Vista upgrade comes with the 32-bit media and "instructions on how to obtain a 64-bit DVD". So, do I need to buy the Microsoft Vista upgrade ($119)? Or am I entitled to a 64-bit disk for free? If I am entitled to it, how do I get it?
Anyone know?

Randy and I were kicking this around as far as we know you have to do a straight reformat to go to 64 bit, as games and some software adds a x86 line in the registry so that it knows to run it as a piece of 32bit software.
And as far as compatibility goes, use any browser but IE and you are fine, and even then you won't notice a difference from 32bit/64bit browsers but when it comes to have 3 gigs of ram to 8 gigs of ram (thats the difference you will notice :P) I always recommend Vista 64bit and even then it does have a compatibility mode to let you run as XP in case it doesn't work natively in Vista. |

Never Upgrade OS over an older version!
Thats the rule to remember. Never seen a upgrade go good like that.
A clean install is the way to go. Very little problems going that direction. Usually just a driver thingy. :)

These days, 64 bit is almost mandatroy, with GFX cards eating up a GB of RAM apiece. 64-bit Vista is ok, especially since 32-bit apps are now coded to run properly on a 64-bit machine instead of crashing.
If people could code right, 8-bit code could run on a 64-bit OS. The problem is people write programs assuming a certain amount of bits, and fail to protect against changes that could be made in the future.
I wrote many 16-bit apps for windows 3.1. Despite Vista not supporting 16-bit apps, they work fine.
Most 32-bit stuff works on 64-bit now, so I'd recommend Vista 64 (although with a XP SP2 or 98 SE dual-boot :D)

I see no mention in Microsoft sites about DirectX 10 being a preview.
I see all sorts of DirectX 10 video proving it is tremendously better, especially for texture overlays... and I see a bunch of Direct X 11 next generation preview stuff out there, but DirectX 10 is definitely better, far better, see the ultimate case in point Bioshock in DirectX 10 mode... the graphics are absolutely amazing. I would comment that DX10 is, as with all DX updates, incrementally better, not vastly superior.
I have yet to see a good explanation, though, of why DX10 does not work on XP. My uneducated assumption is that the DX drivers should be dependent on the video card rather than the O/S, so my guess is that it is a Microsoft/nVidia conspiracy!

well i dont think nvidia had anything to do with it..but i think microsoft had everything to do with it..to push their gaming system (microsoft games) on computer users.and requiring them to have dx10 and how do you get it...you got to have microsoft vista of course.....too bad that idea fell flat on their heads..lmao..there are just two many gaming alternatives..to hold the public hostage to make them use a not so freindly computer system...someday microsoft will learn....someday..

I will agree it may have been a poor decision not to make DX10 available on XP, however, I read somewhere that DX10 relies on certain ehnacements in the Vista Graphics engine that may have made coding DX10 for XP a much larger project or maybe even a complete recode of some important Vista code into a non operating system specific portable format that they just did not want to do.
Again it is a marketting decision on Microsoft's part I am sure, I am not particularly fond of their often heavy handed tactics, however that said, I can understand where they are coming from working in Software myself, we code new features, we do not put them back in the old version because we want our clients on our latest version, it lowers our support and development costs and makes troubleshooting infinitely easier. That is why companies exist, peoples jobs depend on revenue.
Name me a company that says we love the world so much we give our product away, pay top rate wages and just blow money with no income because we are rich already... Times Up... you can't because they do not exist.. Dave Edited by Kliebor2 - 24 Sep 2008 at 3:08pm |
